I have been working at CAE as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great mood, low average age so it is really dynamic and projects are really interesting and different from one another.

    Cons

There is a lot to learn. Not complicated things, but a lot of systems with a lot of variables and differences over their iterations.

    Advice to Management

I'd say to keep it that way! The business/project structure seems to be well studied and feels really efficient. The backlog seems to be overloaded though, maybe hire more to be sure not to lose contracts.

    Pros

    - Benefits and wages are ok. not terrific and not terrible.
    - they are trying to change the company culture at the top but the mid management do not follow
    - Lot of communications but they dont walk the talk

    Cons

    - Evaluation system is crooked and depends on how nice you are with your boss, his boss regardless of your performance
    - evaluation has nothing to do with salary raise.
    - multiple reorgs. the mid management do not seem to know what they are doing
    - Politics , politics and politic

    Advice to Management

Smart people like working with smart

I have been working at CAE full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice, smart and professional people,
    Can present some nice challenges,
    Flexible hours,
    Payed overtime,
    Generous benefits,
    Experts in there field,
    Broad system overview,
    Opportunities to travel,
    Perdiem.

    Cons

    Lack of creativity,
    A lot of grunt work,
    Huge disparity in salaries,
    Very repetitive task,
    No team work; very solitary,
Huge inconsistency between objectifs and tools provided to achieved them,
Very top heavy with a very top down approach,
    No training for anyone,
Tries to apply same formula to all engineering groups
    Employed are not valued,
Technical decision are often away from the appropriate party.
Absence of real technical career "route"

    Advice to Management

In all fairness, although I dislike working at CAE, I do very much like the company and it's people. I believe it was great values but a poor culture. There is a lot and amazing people at all level of the company and it could greatly benefit of a real bottom up approach.

I have been working at CAE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-You can learn a lot about the aerospace industry

    Cons

-Salaries fairly low, for any industry (aerospace and other)
-Salary is low for the difficulty and complexity of the work

    Advice to Management

It takes 1 to 2 years for an employee to learn all the skills and CAE software they have to use to become proficient/competent/independent. Value your employees more.

I have been working at CAE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

*The people at the technical level are awesome.
*The products are very interesting and challenging.

    Cons

*No respect for technical workers estimates and raised "red flags".
*Impossible deadlines that everyone knows we won't make, then when the deadline arrives we don't hear anything of it and keep business as usual until its done.
*They assume everyone technical is interchangeable, like a UI specialist can be transferred into flight models on a management whim,

    Advice to Management

You are disconnected from the realities of your product and its technical complexities. If you continue to fire all your senior technical staff and stop listening to the technical advisors (not just 1 at the top that doesn't work with the technical fellows), you will drive the new platform into the ground (as well as the company).
The cheapest solution today, will be the most expensive solution in the long run.

I worked at CAE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

CAE is a great place for a young engineer to start their career. Dynamic work environment, interesting end-product, smart engineers. Opportunities to learn. Opportunities for international travel. Good benefits, salary is fair. Flexible work schedule. Overtime and irregular hours are paid extra.

    Cons

Constant paradigm shifting in management. Re-structuring attempts in engineering in the last 7 years have not led to any notable improvement. Employee morale is low because of it. Time sheets for salaried employees are annoying. Limited hours available for projects encourage "quick fix" solutions instead of long-term sustainability. Lots of opportunities to make lateral careers moves, but limited opportunities to move upward. Very little transparency to employees when it comes to management plans, costs, etc.

    Advice to Management

Changing too often and not following up is a recipe for frustration and employee disengagement. Listen to employees, and let them be involved in the decision-making process. Be transparent about costs and management's intentions with the company so that employees understand why decisions are being made.
