    I worked at CAE full-time

    Pros

Work-life balance is what you make of it. A small core of very committed people try their best to make it a good place to work. The business has great potential in the market.

    Cons

This is a monarchy. The king issues his decrees from a far-off castle in Montreal and the lords, ladies and peasants must obey. If you can't, it's off with your head. Instead of listing all the problems, I will simply say, people here either escape as soon as they find another opportunity or have been here so long that they just keep their heads down and dream of their not-too-distant retirement--that or they are... still hoping that a white knight will someday come and free them.

    Advice to Management

Broaden yourselves and your experience. Find managers and executives with new perspectives and stronger leadership who can elaborate a strategy and stick with it for longer than a month. Support and empower your people rather than starve and belittle them. Update your systems, the right way. Make plans, real plans that are based on real data and real opportunities. And show a little backbone in front of the Wall... Street analysts.

I have been working at CAE full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Over the past few years CAE has put a lot of effort into modernization of the workplace. The workspace for the majority of Employees in montreal has been changed to an open work area without assigned seating. There are now modern concepts like 'quiet rooms', treadmill and standing desks, lots of light, social areas, a rooftop terrace, free electric vehicle charging spots, free metro-shuttle and many more that... complemented the existing benefits such as flex-time work hours.

    Cons

With a constantly growing and changing business, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up, but the benefits outweigh the downsides!

I worked at CAE for more than a year

    Pros

Great people. A Montreal compagnie. The product is very impressive and honestly cool.

    Cons

Everything for employee is cheap, from the officie material (cheap pens that break after a few uses...), to the contract renewal where they just keep saying they have no money.... at the time there was a lot of lay off too. It was easy to find better.

    Advice to Management

Just stop taking people for granted, value your them.

I worked at CAE full-time for more than a year

    Pros

See a plane fly by every now and again...

    Cons

Long unsociable hours Montreal rules Oxford, tried to make Sales and somehow higher ups in Montreal got involved and told me how to speak to people on the phone when making a sale! No work life balance Backwards mentality in Oxford Unfriendly staff and mean environment - No staff help NO training offered whatsoever High turnover Redundancies happen frequently and often poorly timed Micro management from... the top level Terrible morale

    Advice to Management

Montreal is the HQ but don't forget about Oxford. Sort out the morale and sort out the out of date simulators. Staff refuse to wear CAE branded clothing so the main issue is change management. The simulators are 30+ years old.

I have been working at CAE

    Pros

For those interested in the aviation industry, this place has potential. It is possible to learn about aviation if you are willing to put in the time

    Cons

Your experience within the company will vary depending on where you work. For instance, overtime in Montreal, for the engineers is paid at 1.5x hourly rate. In Ottawa, the same person would only get 1x hourly rate. Engineers in Montreal get per diem when travelling while in Ottawa it is receipts (to the per diem maximum) unless the contract for the customer specifies otherwise. I've had threats to cancel the... Christmas break, and in another case requests to work it. Training is expected to be funded by the employee, and on their own time (there is no training budget). And it is made part of the performance evaluation. For the engineers, either combine the regular and Technical Track review process into one or get rid of one of them; look at ALL sites that implement it and make sure that it is either customized to the site or only contains things that are common to all. Tool updates are either fast and furious or few and far between; that is on a project you may never change a tool (even after it is no longer supported by the vendor or the company stops paying maintenance on it) while there can also be a number of parallel tools in use (for instance, I've seen 4 different CM systems in the last year). For software people, if you don't have a university degree, don't apply; your career will be limited to a junior (assuming you even get hired).

    Advice to Management

Treat employees at all sites the same. It shouldn't vary by internal organization. For a company that preaches training to its customers, be willing to follow your own advice and provide your employees with training. Get out and see what is happening; you can't see what is going on while segregated into the "C-Suites". Look at the locations where you have operations in; for instance a college diploma from... Quebec is not the same as one from Ontario or other provinces. When setting up things like the technical track don't limit career progression based on a persons education; use their performance.

    "Not bad"

Current Employee - Software Developer in Budapest

I have been working at CAE full-time

    Pros

Interesting industry Flexible working time Overtime is paid Nice and modern office in a quiet place Friendly atmosphere Chance to travel to other sites for up to 6 months, with per diem

    Cons

High level of bureaucracy on Montreal side, slow decision making Usually can't use the latest IDEs and other tools Too much non-programming tasks

    Advice to Management

Try to cut through the bureaucracy and try to find more challenging and satisfying tasks for the employees.

    Pros

Real design and development happens with prototype projects. There are lot of good people

    Cons

Middle and Lower Management at Montreal could not understand the concepts and good initiatives from Upper management. They are not willing to work by collaborating globally.

    Advice to Management

Implement and inspect what you say
