    Pros

Met some amazing and wonderful co-workers. Enjoyed working with student employees.

    Cons

Low wages with raises in cents not dollars. Managers with little to no food service experience, having nothing to offer or teach. Promotions based on popularity not merit. No training, you're on your own!

    Advice to Management

Hire people with real world food service experience, which means you need to pay a livable wage. TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING!

I have been working at CAL POLY as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working at Cal Poly are the students. They make it worth getting up each morning and going to work. The location and weather are great, and the campus is a pleasant place to be, overall.

    Cons

The administration is fairly incompetent and aggressively adversarial. They like to pretend they are supportive but they are really grabbing what they can. Admins and Deans and down to department heads are becoming more and more intimidating. They must be scared of something. They break contracts without hesitation but always have an excuse or loophole to cite. They cannot get their financial situation in order and their management systems are outdated. They use methods that most other organizations abandoned 50 years ago. Even the military is run better and more friendly to its people. You will not feel valued at Cal Poly. Oh, and the pay sucks. Management keeps telling everybody they will fix the problem, but then they trot out the usual excuses for not doing so.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to change its approach on every level. They like to talk about the corporatization of the university, but if any half decent corporation were run this way the board and the executives would all be fired. The fish rots from the head.

    Pros

Most people are friendly, good benefits

    Cons

The pay is not enough to afford living in the area without a second or 3rd income. It is nearly impossible to advance in some departments, where promotions are given to favored employees and not based on work load, ability or aptitude. Trying to get any help from Human Resources is futile as upper management has no clue what they're doing and obviously doesn't care.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of upper management that does nothing to improve the university. There is such potential if you'd get rid of under or non-performing management instead of looking the other way

I worked at CAL POLY part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Depending on the supervisor, you might be able to be cautious with your body and not get hurt being overworked.

    Cons

Low compensation, late payroll often, disorganized, overworked.

    Advice to Management

Quit overworking the small amount of workers due to the fact that not enough people were hired.

    Pros

Ability to work with great students
    Always busy with new projects
    Beautiful area

    Cons

CYA to the max. Everything is always a hastle. Was not allowed to talk with other campus officials without gaining approval. Even though I am a professional Staff member. Most Admin do not care about students. Rather see them as individuals who if a student/parent comes to them, we are to move heaven & earth for them and neglect everyone else. Micro managed to every detail. Office Hours started at 10 am, and would be getting calls at 10 am asking on updates on situations from the night before that you knew nothing about yet.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees, they have masters degrees for a reason. Don't preach work life balance, and then state that we're expected to check email/have meetings every night.

Don't be scared of the sometimes harsh reality of critical feedback.

    Pros

Campus is a positive environment. Working at a university can be like its own community and can be a very nice place to work. This university was that way years ago.

    Cons

The evolution of poor management, marked lack of ethics on the part of management and individuals promoting to positions beyond their abilities has has created a very negitive and toxic work environment.

    Advice to Management

Start hiring off campus people for upper management positions. Individuals that started at the universty as a file clerk have no business in personnel management just because they have worked at the university for 10 years. If they have not been availing themselves of the educational benefits of the university, they are still just qualified as a file clerk. Hmmmm.
