I worked at CAL POLY part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Being a student, this position was conveniently on campus and very willing to work around my school schedule. Student environment that fosters Cal Poly community. Great work references after graduation.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for growth. Systematic structure that lacks opportunities to reward or encourage employees. Wages are typically minimum with little room for growth.

    Advice to Management

I would encourage management to take the time to check in with their student employees. During difficult weeks or midterm season, it can be very challenging to balance course load and work. Additionally, students should be given more opportunities to represent Cal Poly such as discount at the University Store.

I have been working at CAL POLY full-time

    Pros

Working for Cal Poly is very enjoyable if you're looking for long-term career stability, work-life balance, and a chance to keep learning and polishing your skills as you work. Coworkers are generally friendly and respectful, and honest feedback and communication is encouraged. Lots of projects involve research and development into impact on the campus so you need to be self-motivated to learn new skill sets.

    Cons

As a state university, promotions are infrequent and salary is not as competitive compared to the rest of the industry, which is an expected trade-off.

    Advice to Management

Reorganization/restructuring happens once in a few years so be aware of changes in team dynamics and acceptance level of new changes.

I have been working at CAL POLY full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great location and weather. High quality students. Wonderful undergraduate education for the price

    Cons

Low salaries and insufficient classrooms to handle the load

    Advice to Management

Worry less about 4 year graduation rates and more about maintaining high quality hands-on education

    Pros

Hours are very flexible and will suit your class schedule, work up to 20h/week. The other workers are generally very friendly.

    Cons

Jobs can be monotonous, and talking or listening to music while working the floor is discouraged, so shifts can feel very long.

    Advice to Management

Be more organized; oftentimes people could be doing something more efficient but aren't. Also, find a better communication system between cooks and line severs if possible, since miscommunication were too frequent.

I worked at CAL POLY (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to work with students you go to classes with and the full time employees are all really nice!

    Cons

The scheduling system is really unorganized and somewhat unfair. Most of my shifts were not what I requested and they made me stay PAST finals week.

    Advice to Management

Listen more to the students about what we need to continue to work there because those are the individuals that work at the store.
