I have been working at CAL POLY full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Cal Poly has a great student body; students are extremely sharp and motivated. Teaching at Cal Poly is the best part of the job, as it should be.

    Cons

Administration is bloated and getting more so every day. New VPs of this and that are continually being hired at very high salaries. It is sickening.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to faculty and classes being taught. These are the mission. Quit trying to erase Cal Poly's past by doing things like changing the name of our decades old "El Corral Bookstore" to "University Store". Wow, that was imaginative! Great leadership! Cut the size of your administration and put the resources saved into the mission of Cal Poly. You will become a hero and can do great things for Cal Poly.

    Pros

    Cons

    Some departments pay very poorly.

I worked at CAL POLY part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Being a student, this position was conveniently on campus and very willing to work around my school schedule. Student environment that fosters Cal Poly community. Great work references after graduation.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for growth. Systematic structure that lacks opportunities to reward or encourage employees. Wages are typically minimum with little room for growth.

    Advice to Management

I would encourage management to take the time to check in with their student employees. During difficult weeks or midterm season, it can be very challenging to balance course load and work. Additionally, students should be given more opportunities to represent Cal Poly such as discount at the University Store.
