I worked at CARE (USA) (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic mission, great organizational culture, salary wasn't bad, lots of great staff

    Cons

Most management plus positions go to white people with the "lowest" positions almost entirely held by black people

For some reason they refuse to nurture in-house talent.

    Advice to Management

Diversity --- live it, be it instead of just talking about it.

I worked at CARE (USA) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

CARE can be a great place to work depending upon department and manager.Benefits, time off, 401K.

    Cons

Work life balance nearly destroyed, used to be much better. The indecisiveness, inappropriate behavior by some colleagues, and outdated technology presents some obvious challenges. There is little to no career advancement, and often times a dead end in a position. Over 5 rounds of layoffs and furlough have created a low morale and distrust with many employees, management, to the board. Constant reorganization and vision change of course has created a culture of instability and fear in various areas.

    Advice to Management

    Where to begin..

I worked at CARE (USA) (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mission driven, interesting work, diverse staff, strong brand

    Cons

Decisions take FOREVER, there's too much "maybe", difficult organizational culture that needs a lot of work, especially around accountability

    Advice to Management

"Maybe" is not a decision, figure out how to retain talent

I have been working at CARE (USA) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The work-life balance is great for many of the departments. We recently have a new CEO so there is some hope for internal improvements to take place.

    Cons

Staff morale is pretty low. There isn't a lot of room for advancement once you get your foot in the door. Nepotism has become a way of life for some departments, again leading to low morale. A lot of really great, dedicated people have left which is disheartening.

    Advice to Management

There should be dedicated leadership training for managers, as well as something that would insure that those that are dedicated to the mission can advance vertically and not just horizontally through the organization.
