I have been working at CARFAX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Best people in the business.
    Best tools available.
Laser-like focus on being the best as a complete solution for the car dealer and the same focus on helping the used car owner in every aspect from buying to servicing to selling.
Always wanting team members be more successful.
Creating a work/life experience for the team.
Very transparent about success or areas for improvement.
Opportunity to go others places in the comany.
    Senior team longevity.

    Cons

I really can’t think of anything that sticks out.
There are always going to be frustrations in any workplace but the pros make the cons easy to move past.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing because I want to retire from CARFAX.

I have been working at CARFAX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone from HR to the Senior Team to the myCarfax team CARES!
    Plenty of paid time off.
Health Insurance is top notch (Coming from the Federal Government/Tricare).
    Pay is generous.
    Bonuses are even more generous.
The WHOLE Carfax team works so well together because we all care about each other's success.
I have never felt so appreciated in any other job.
    Team events/activities are awesome!
We love pets! Most dog breeds allowed!

    Cons

Inclement weather procedures align with the Fairfax County Government. Unless you have a job where you can work from home, one must use paid time off if they cannot make it to work.
The Fairfax County Government NEVER closes or delays despite dangerous road conditions.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing because waking up every day to go to work is a complete joy!
Carfax makes me feel like I'm making a difference in lives every day!

    Cons

Nothing is in my mind negative about Carfax

    Advice to Management

I have been working at CARFAX full-time

    Pros

Team work is a real thing that happens, not something you just talk about.
    Work/Life balance is amazing.

    Cons

Open office floor plans can sometimes get a little rowdy.

I have been working at CARFAX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Continuous effort to be innovative, improve, and deliver great products. The culture is great, bringing dogs to work is always fun, and the dress code is super casual (Jeans, t-shirt, sneakers).

    Cons

The level of effort to make changes can be a lot as systems are built on top of each other than patched, then modified, then built on top of another etc...the dependancies and lack of thorough documentation can make things challenging.

    Advice to Management

Support initiatives for legacy application modernization even if it means taking away resources from the new and shiny products.

I have been working at CARFAX full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Nice people to work with

    Cons

    - Significantly underpay employees compared to industry average

    - Recently switched to cheaper benefits provider

    - Employees who take on more responsibility or skill up, are not compensated for doing so

    - Only way to convince management that you're worthy of a compensation increase is to threaten to leave - then they will promote you and give you a raise

    - Recently started decreasing bonus payouts to employees, in lieu of awarding stock options which take a year to vest. Bonus monies used to be available after being rewarded. Now employees get less, and have to wait a year for a portion of it.

    - Lots of mandatory surveys / marketing to make the company look like it's a great place to work, when in reality it isn't much better than your average marketing company

    - Survey meetings produce promises from management about addressing issues, but in reality nothing ever happens

    - Flat org structure, not much room for career advancement

    - Work life balance that is promised, doesn't really exist. Required to be in office daily, and telecommuting has to be warranted / is increasingly scrutinized

    - Noisy and distracting open office

    - Limited individual growth opportunities outside of what is important to Carfax

    - Very little transparency, even though company includes it in culture statement. Employees get very little, if any, feedback on ideas and suggestions

    - Playbook is a sham - company does not live up to the values they enforce

    - If you don't act like Carfax is the best place to work, ever, you're not a "team player". There are so many marketing gimmicks at play at Carfax to make it seem like "the best place to be"

    - Feedback from newer employees wearing rosy colored glasses, and feedback from lifers who have become favorites or are planning on retiring, is more valued / not ignored

    - Rampant favoritism. Employees are rewarded randomly with perks like remote work or getting to work on their own project, etc... No explanation as to why they get to vs anyone else is ever given.

    Advice to Management

    - Compensate employees fairly
    - Reward employees who skill up / have experience and tenure
    - Offer growth opportunities important to individuals, not important to Carfax
    - Change org structure to not be flat
    - Increase telecommuting options, and limit core office hours
    - Get rid of open office and go back to cubicles; open offices are proven (based on studies) to be distracting, noisy, as well as counter to increased collaboration
    - More transparency

I worked for Carfax for over 13 years. Carfax was a home not just a job. Family was made and will never be forgotten. Perfect doesnt exists but they are pretty close in my opinion. Equal balance of give and take. THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX!!

    Cons

Need massage therapist more often for the Sales Team. :-)

I have been working at CARFAX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Collaborative environment, no jerks allowed, high-performing teams everywhere!

    Cons

Less paid time off than some other companies, but the culture and positive environment make up for it; company promotes a healthy balance of work and play, so there is less likelihood of burnout

    Cons

I worked at CARFAX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Work from home
    Quarterly meetings

    Cons

    Nepotism run rampant
    Favoritism run rampant
Doing the right thing doesn’t get you anywhere
    Back stabbing
    High school popularity culture
Everything has to be “awesome” all the time otherwise your not a team player

    Advice to Management

When I started the Playbook in my mind was amazing....till the day I learned it meant no more then the paper it was printed on. Allowing the favoritism from top executives even when faced with evidence of the issue is not a way to run a company. Allowing sales people to lie, and essentially steal money (unearned commission) from the company should never be ok. HR is a puppet department to make you feel good till you need them. Always have to be positive no matter what...even when getting bullied by others you have to put on a happy face. Learn that it is ok to have everything NOT ok. It is how organizations learn and grow. Sad part about writing this is that it will go in one ear and out the other. Potential applicants know that while many reviews here are positive it is because you are encouraged to write one in the first few weeks of working there....of course when “everything is awesome!”
