Excellent work life balance, exposure to modern computing concepts
Jul 29, 2020 - Senior Systems Developer in Columbia, MORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The company focuses on employee health and well being - work-life balance is very important and encouraged. Managers advocate for their employees. Great place to get exposed to mature software development standards. You will learn a ton and be surrounded by other smart, yet humble, individuals. Great team atmosphere with individuals being willing to help out. Excellent company across the board, I highly recommend it.
Cons
Parent company continues to slowly erode good benefits, such as health insurance. Advancement opportunities can be hard to come by, mainly because people like the company and don't leave often.

Working for Carfax
Dec 13, 2017 - Account Executive in Centreville, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
This is one of the few companies that I have worked for that actually has a pressure free training program. While I was learning, they allowed me to crash and trip up early so that I knew what I was doing when I was out on my own. All without hurting my confidence, and without worrying about my income. There was no limit to the amount of questions I could ask, or a limit in my supervisors patience. Overall it is a great place to grow and hone my skills as a professional.
Cons
If you can handle working in a cubicle in an office located in a populated region, you'll be fine. If not, you might get burned out. They do try very hard to make the environment as friendly as possible though, which makes the cubicle part easier.
Continue readingGlad you have enjoyed working here. We really try to help make sure people have an opportunity to learn their job and get comfortable. Keep asking questions- its how we all get better! BTW, no to the "c" word. We have work stations. :)

Pros
The people here make CARFAX the best place I have ever worked! We have an amazing culture in the office and out in the field!
Cons
Nothing other than the occasional long day, but what full time job doesn’t have that? This place is so great that even long days are not that bad!

Mar 2, 2022 - Senior Software Developer, Team Lead in London, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Carfax offers employees a great place to grow their career, with dedicated time set aside for personal development, and lots of opportunities for advancement. The work life balance is excellent and the compensation is competitive. Feedback from employees at all levels is valued, and the company fosters an open, honest, and friendly culture.
Cons
None I can think of

"Truly, a great place to work!" post ..... HR/Management, we get it, you want to raise the ratings on here
Jun 11, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Rockville, MDRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great vacay package, awesome coworkers on your team, free friday lunches, prize giveaways and very good benefits package
Cons
Since my other post was taken down because it didn't meet glassdoor's guidelines, I wanted to post again and let potential new hires know of the many downfalls within the DBU and Carfax as a whole since HR and Management is trying to hide it with their phony posts on here such as 'Truly, a great place to work!' and 'Couldn't get much better!' Most of this below pertains to the inside sales team... 1) Uneven territories. Management divvies up the accounts to the reps but there are about 5-10 of the team of 30 that have 1.5 or 2 territories which as a result gives them more accounts to call and more inbound leads. Now some of the have earned those extra accounts but some people just get them for no reason. The ones who don't have more than one territory are held to same sales standards, which is totally unfair and as a result, they are in constant fear of their job. 2) Metrics and lack there of doing it the right way. It almost seems like management loves to focus on this the most for some reason. And the ones who didn't hit metrics over and over again always get fired. Each rep is responsible for averaging at least 56 calls a day and being on the phone for 28% which comes to being on the phone for over 2 hours/day. If you don't hit your metrics for the month, you are docked 15% of your commission check. If management wasn't so focused on calls/time, every employee could focus on selling more. Now to the doing it the right way part.... Some of the reps just call companies who they know they won't use Carfax but consistently call on them hit the number of calls metric but management puts a blind eye to them because they are bringing in money. Even if every rep was doing it the right way, it still isn't fair to the ones who only have one territory. Less people to call and you end up harassing the dealers when they tell you to call back in 6 months but you have to call them back in 3 months because you ran out of people to call. 3) Lack of career advancement. Unless you are in the good ole' boy club in management, there really isn't much career growth at Carfax. Now you have a chance to make good money (if you are lucky to have more than 1 territory) and its seems like a great job at first. To really move up or get more territories, it seems like you need to have a family member in management or you could do event outside of the company like their Bike to the Beach thing, and befriend management there, guaranteeing you perks, giveaway, trips, and benefits that you probably weren't deserving of when comparing to the top reps doing it morally and ethically right. 4) Constant raising of prices on dealers. Over the past 3-4 years. Management is finding it hard to grow the company so they decide to raise the prices on the main product package for their current dealers and the ones the reps are reaching out to. The Carfax brand is so strong to the consumer that it forces the dealers hand to buy the core product but with the consistent raising of prices dealers are canceling or not signing up at all and going to Carfax's only real competitor, AutoCheck because they are so much cheaper. 5) Lack of leadership. There is much leadership from management on the DBU. If you are struggling, they will just say why aren't you preforming like (insert name with double territories)? Weekly morning meetings are there for suggestions for whats working and whats not, but management never listens to the reps. If you want to speak up about things that are being done ethically/morally wrong, they will just shrug it off and probably just say they are complaining. I think real changes for the better could happen for carfax and the DBU if they actually listened to reps, but people are afraid to speak of in fear of their job too.

Director, HR
CARFAX was just ranked number 5 as a Top Place to Work for the 4th straight year from the Washington Post. The recognition is based 100% on employee feedback. Whether you work in HR, Accounting, IT or Sales, we are Team CARFAX. We learn from one from one another and strive to get better. Not every employee who leaves CARFAX is happy with us. It just isn’t possible. I thank you for the feedback because it does make us a stronger team.

Behind the Smoke and Mirrors
Nov 8, 2017 - Regional Account ManagerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits, healthcare with great coverage, fair vacation policy. Offer nice swag at events. I truly believe the company wants to be a place of great culture. I believe there is a disconnect between CEO, HR and how management really treats their employees. Top level technology offered to field team.
Cons
I'm guessing working within the office environment is a whole different ball of wax than being out in the field, which is why the reviews are high. While the company offers fun business meeting trips 3 times a year, that is pretty much where the loving/fun atmosphere ends. This perfect person for this position is a puppet. You are literally given talk tracks and role-playing of these. They truly do not prefer you deviate from the lines they have told you to say. If you try to talk to a Director with logic you get slapped down with narcissism of what "you should have done". Condescension is not a love language. This is from senior management down. Just when everyone is about to meltdown, they have their large group meetings, Stockholm Syndrome you about how lucky you are to work there. They provide nice trips, food and booze and great gifts... then you go back home to finish dealing with huge, non justified price increases (so IHS can buy another 30 companies) and being talked to like children by management.

My resume is no longer needed!
Apr 3, 2018 - Anonymous Employee in Centreville, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I have been at CARFAX for over two years and can honestly say that I absolutely love working here. I’m over the age of 45 meaning that I have worked in many places/environments so I’m not saying this place is great because it’s my first job out of school, but saying it from experience having seen some bad places. This company truly embodies the saying “Work/life balance” and literally goes out of their way to keep employees happy. Everybody that’s here is happy to be here and almost every day is a great day. Teammates are friends and where in many places on Friday you say “See ya Monday’ here it’s often “What happening this weekend?”. The work environment is casual, laid back but also HIGHLY collaborative and team oriented which sets up everyone for success. Six months ago I stood in the office and tore up my resume as I have decided that I have found my final job and can’t imagine working anywhere else!
Cons
Honestly the only 'cons' I can think of would be petty and not worth listing.
