I worked at CAT Financial full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Good pay, great benefits Very good college recruiting program; great place to gain job experience Great group of people to work with overall. Strong social culture (lots of extracurricular's if you're into that sort of thing) Huge, stable company Incredibly nice facility includes cafeteria and gym

    Cons

Many managers are simply not great at their jobs; bad decisions made frequently due to lack of actual knowledge. Culture still very rigid and outdated about many things. Review process is arduous and has a reputation for being unfair (managers not great at differentiating employees consistently). Many policies are set from HQ in Peoria; people up there can be extremely difficult to work with. Location in downtown...

    Advice to Management

Loosen up. Don't be so conservative and risk-averse that you miss out on so many huge opportunities.

    I worked at CAT Financial

    Pros

Good pay and benefits for area. Job security. Nice building. Some good managers

    Cons

Leadership directs your career, meaning they pick jobs for you that they need filled even if you don't like the work, or have the skills/experience for it. Sometimes it works out for you, sometimes it doesn't. If you get trapped in a role you have no business being in they make it very hard to move on by setting expectations beyond your capabilities and requiring great performance in your current role to be eligible to...

    Advice to Management

Let people guide their own careers. When it's clear things aren't working change course instead of spending more time and money on doomed projects.

I have been working at CAT Financial full-time

    Pros

I work within the Information Services department at Caterpillar Financial as an IS Analyst. Overall I would say there are some great teams that work within the department and some very talented people. I think it's a great place to get experience working in IT. Plus if you would like a long-term, stable employment with possibilities of "moving up" within the company, (i.e. going in to management) the company would be...

    Cons

There are a lack of higher-level purely technical jobs available. The emphasis for IS employees is on pursuing leadership positions (i.e. team leads, then management eventually). This is fine for a lot of employees but it drives the people most passionate about technology away from the company.

    Advice to Management

Establish a path for those employees that are passionate about technology and want to make Caterpillar Financial a stronger competitor within the tech space. We have lost some of our most talented, younger technical people because there were no higher level technical positions available. Allow our talented technical people to reach their potential. Also I don't like the philosophy of "buy first, figure it out later"...
