I worked at CBI UK full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - good exposure to senior external members and gov't officials
    - generally nice, and intelligent staff to work with
    - great exposure in media to show case work

    Cons

    - transition in management does NOT have any direction. clearly at odds trying to maximize commercial value, but are losing good policy work in the process which loses members, and this creates a cycle
    - need clear direction and goals from management
    - terrible renumeration which leads to very inexperienced, junior staff and low retention

    Advice to Management

Transparency in the organisation's direction and mission and commensurate salaries with expectations will lead to better quality staff and better commercial outcomes

I worked at CBI UK full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The CBI has a relaxed culture, providing employees with a lot of autonomy over their work and processes. However, does this lead to an unstructured way of working with little guidance and input from managers that you do sometimes need

    Cons

Big commercial targets but without additional support and staff on the ground.
Complete lack of career development, particularly in commercial.
Old fashioned outlook - not diverse at all. Promote a 'stuffy' atmosphere.
An ever-growing hierarchy which just increases unrest and instability within teams working very hard and trying to do a good job
Extremely poor pay and reward for the targets that need to be met and the level of responsibility given with some tasks.

    Advice to Management

Urgently need to rethink development opportunities and salaries - good talent will not stay.
Change the hierarchical culture being adopted and give good staff the internal opportunities to step up to a new job, with increased responsibility and use their initiatives rather than hiring in old fashioned middle management instead.
Re-think stretching targets - either up salaries or get more people on the ground to help out. Top line will grow if you invest a bit more in your bottom line, and also listen to them.

I have been working at CBI UK full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great workspace, lovely offices with young and intelligent colleagues who work tirelessly. Everyone puts in a lot of effort and the exposure at an early stage in the career is probably unrivalled

    Cons

Can be quite hierarchical with some challenges to career progression, although they do facilitate career moves if you want to change the direction of your career. Pay is possible better elsewhere but this is a great stepping stone.

    Advice to Management

Allow staff more independence and better progression into more senior roles.

I have been working at CBI UK full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Lots of exposure to senior government employees and business leaders.
    - Well recognised organisation which bodes well for your CV.

    Cons

    - Lack of progression unless you are interested in a career in management.
    - Many of those in management are incompetent and only rose to that level by staying at the organisation long enough until more talented peers had moved on to better opportunities.
    - Workload is significant and unpredictable, with management or more senior employees frequently taking credit for your output.
    - Renumeration and benefits are appalling in relation to the jobs market, even compared with the public sector which the organisation likes to think it benchmarks itself against.
    - Departments are very compartmentalised and hostile to one-another, inhibiting harmonious working practices.
    - Staff turnover is very high (around 30% annually) and many staff want to move on but struggle to do so given prohibitive three-month notice period.

    Advice to Management

    - Don't squander what talent you have and incentivise them to stay on.
    - Practice what you preach in the media. You promote flexible working but internally it is frowned upon. Your promotion of greater diversity in the business community is commendable, but isn't reflected in your management nor junior staff.
    - Cut the bureaucracy as it kills any chance of innovation and opportunities to provide a better member service.
    - Have given a positive outlook as I believe leadership under Carolyn Fairbairn is moving in the right direction, albeit at a snail's pace.

    Pros

    - Great exposure to very senior level government and business figures

    Pros

The people, although quite a lot of them have now left or are leaving.

    Cons

No career progression unless you are on the graduate scheme.

    Advice to Management

You have so much talent that is wasted or undermined by not very bright managers with no management skills or ability.
