I worked at CBS Interactive full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Most co-workers are friendly.
    - Benefits are good.
    - Nice offices.
    - The culture, in general, is enjoyable.

    Cons

-The company prefers to always hire low paid, low experience engineers. Senior level people that leave are almost always replaced by multiple entry level people.

    - Many middle managers are only interested in empire building and taking care of themselves.

    - No real career advancement path or opportunities.

    - A very cliquish culture.

    - SF office is filled with questionable engineers, probably due to having to compete with better Bay Area companies.

    - You will be worked to death and under appreciated.

    - The best and brightest tend to leave due to not being challenged or lack of career growth.

    - Work/life balance isn't good.

    - Racist HR people.

I worked at CBS Interactive as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great culture. Good for people with the creative type of jobs, Flexible timing and work from home is allowed most of the times.

    Cons

Tech stack is old. They are in the process of upgrade. Most of the people in team work from home so mentorship is less.

    Advice to Management

Management seems to be good. But is overloaded. Need to upgrade the tech stack. Need to improve UI so that sites will be more user-friendly.

I have been working at CBS Interactive full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting brands to work on like C|NET, CBS Sports, and Gamespot.
Friendly environment with smart, motivated people.
    Good Work/Life balance

    Cons

    Revolving door of talent.
Too much interference from CBS Corp. who has a very "classic" way of looking at things.
Low salaries, though benefits are pretty good.
There's always a bare minimum of resources to accomplish anything.
There's too much focus on clicks and views and short attention span content with quality being a lower priority.
Technology is outdated. The central technology solution is slow to adapt and vanilla.
    No strong central technology leadership.
Disparate technology leadership that doesn't communicate and at times feuds with each other.

    Advice to Management

Create an innovation center and push media instead of following the latest trends down into the garbage.

I worked at CBS Interactive as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Internship was very free-form and projects were interesting. Your internship moves at your pace, whether that's super fast or slow. Problems are consistently challenging because all of CBSi's websites are large and popular. You often get to work on solutions that get implemented into production code on large sites. The intern program also offers intern activities (you get paid to attend) that include things like Giants games, tours of SF, and other fun things.

Depends on the team you get placed on but the team I had was awesome and friendly. You can always hit up your coworkers for questions. I had lunch with them almost everyday. Still keep in contact with them. Best part of CBSi!

Hackathon is fairly fun. You get some great prizes, free food, and get to hang out in the office after hours.

Free popcorn, iced tea, and lemonade is nice.

Overall, CBSi really cares about your career development! They don't particularly expect you to stick with them forever and actually encourage you to look around at options.

    Cons

    - Gets a bit boring you move quickly on a project but your manager is super busy that day.
    - Interns not involved in sprint planning
    - No housing
    - No commuting stipend/benefits
    - Slow, old company computer...but I guess it's a bit better than nothing?
    - Lots of technical debt
    - Codebase is a bit mangled

    Advice to Management

The intern program at CBSi is great! Please keep up the investment in your interns. Perhaps provide the interns with more of a structure for the program and make sure to always be ready to challenge their skills.

    Pros

    Amazing culture.
Pretty led back management as long as you're getting your work done.
    Friendly and helpful senior engineers.
    Excellent work organization.

    Cons

    Uses some outdated development tools.
    Reluctance to try new technologies.
    Lose coding standards.
Code reviews could use more eyes on them.
People tend to be specialized too much into their section of the code base.

    Advice to Management

Cross train your engineers in more sections of the code.
Increase the number of active code reviewers, not just rubber stampers or auto added people that never approve / comment.
