I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

CERN has an amazing work environment. You are constantly in the cutting-edge of technology, supporting or actively researching in the fields of IT, electronics, engineering and of course physics. You are surrounded by bright people, with hundreds of opportunities for networking. Overall a great organization to work for!

    Cons

Some positions are not well supervised (reasonable if you consider the hundreds of positions in the dozens of groups), and extra work is not always valued.

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Great benefits, Lots of talented people. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

They make skilled engineers who stay temporarily learn French, because technicians resist to learn English for all of their career (20 years+). It creates a lot of frustration and deteriorates the quality of work. Additionally, because it is so difficult to get a permanent contract people with know-how leave without transferring their knowledge due to the frustration. Very often this leads to making the same work twice...

    Advice to Management

Remove French as a second official language. Reconsider hiring policy regarding engineers (they should not work as in Academia).

I worked at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

CERN is a multidisciplinary and exciting place to work at. If you happened to be designing something ( a system, a component for you system for example), you will have a lot of experts in different departments/ sections who can help with. At the end of the day, you will learn so much from them and also achieve things you wouldn't have done on your own. What I like about it most is that in my department (Beams), whoever...

    Cons

Good training system. Can do language courses (FR or EN) , technical trainings, programming ....etc as long as your supervisor approves and doesn't affect your workload too much. Good holiday scheme

I worked at CERN for more than 4 years

    Pros

Meet mostly young people, feel the international vibe, flexible hours, 30 days of leave per year not including christmas and other public holidays(!), interesting discussions with scientists and engineers, do networking with people from all over the world, good place if you are interested in different cultures and physics. (For Computer scientists) it seems like good place to start a career or to end it...

    Cons

Can feel a bit disorganized sometimes, (for CS people) career-wise you might feel a bit stuck after a while, for fellows there are no possibilities to get any raise of salary or additional benefits, it's difficult to bring in new ideas and influence things as a fellow

I have been working at CERN for more than 2 years

    Pros

One of the best places where someone could wish to work in. It is an international environment with people coming from all over the world, all working together with the same aim, explore science!

    Cons

Low research budgets do not offer many possibilities and career opportunities, big turnaround of people due to high offer of short contracts for young people.
