I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Innovative, cutting-edge technologies, passion for the future

    Cons

If you don't know the right person, you have almost no chance of getting a long-term job or permanent contract, no matter how good you are.

    Advice to Management

Open the applications for the outside world, before you determine them internally in order to preserve the appearance.

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Multicultural environment, flexibility in all terms. Opportunity to learn other cultures while working in an exceptional organisation, participating in the research field.

    Cons

Difficult to stay with a permanent contract. Philosophy of the organisation is to train young people and changing personal regularly. Huge organization with a very defined hierarchy.

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Top notch scientific quality, those in management (section/group level) have all excellent scientific achievements. Very good IT infrastructure and almost complete liberty in choosing software. Campus-like atmosphere with 60+ associations from sailing to dancing, robot building etc. People enjoy staying in after working hours. High salaries as long as the Swiss franc remains strong. Excellent healthcare benefits.

    Cons

The infrastructure is critically dysfunctional: parking places and bicycle stores are overflowing, no air-con (summers are easily 35C+), no public transport from the French side, buildings from the seventies are falling apart, all restaurants are extremely overcrowded, due to traffic jams it takes up to 20 minutes to simply get out of the site by car in peak hours. No on-site gym apart from a refitted old pump room. There...

    Advice to Management

Drop French as official languge. You have 100+ applicants for every position, CERN can afford to reject applicants who can't learn a basic level of English.

I have been working at CERN full-time

      Pros

international environment, interesting problems, ok wages, nice place, everything is close by, lake, airport, mountains

      Cons

housing in the area isn't easy (or cheap), weather in winter can be depressing, the buildings could profit from a bit more care, less academic environment than a university

      Advice to Management

not me to give advice to the management

      Cons

people who has permanent contract many times are not willing to work anymore, a lot of public money wasted, times go slowly, there's not much motivation bureaucracy French speaking people don't want to learn/use English after few years, I know less than I knew when I came to cern

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

The culture at CERN is pretty terrific, the people here take their work very seriously, with real curiosity and passion. It really is cool to be working on the frontier of physics. Collaboration is important here.

      Cons

Unfortunately the age of CERN means a lot of the technology is what could charitably be classed as "legacy". You could end up working on software that should've went away with the Aztecs. As a software engineer I've often found myself in a development silo, which is to say I've been given a project and expected to go away and just do it; without much in the way of feedback. If you like working by yourself, that should...
