    I worked at CERN

    Pros

The work carried out here is very exciting, highly enjoyable and very rewarding. Interest in research and development is very high, so if you enjoy developing new technology it is a wonderful place to work.

    Cons

It is located in the swiss countryside, the nearest biggest city is Geneva which is not a very large city. Work hours are sometimes highly variable depending on project deadlines.

I worked at CERN for more than a year

    Pros

World-class scientists to work with. Colleagues that are passionate about their work.

    Cons

Archaic management structure. Geneva not an amazing city in comparison with other international cities. CERN staff inflexible and know that they can be unreasonable with no consequences. Private life not as good as other cities.

    Advice to Management

Modernise and don't hire robotic people.

    Pros

Nice multi-cultural place to stay for a period, to learn new skills and meet amazing people

    Cons

No cons, as I need to write something..., when you arrive you are a bit lost, looking for place to live in Geneva sometimes is a nightmare and time consuming

    Advice to Management

Amazing place, top of research and, continue like this!

I worked at CERN full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You get to do the physics you want to. You get to participate in the experiment you want to. Great time learning physics by contributing.

    Cons

Very expensive housing. Far from the city, and Geneva isn't much of a happy city. Food at restaurants isn't as good and way too expensive.

    Advice to Management

Very expensive housing. More cosmopolitan food would be great. Food prices are quite steep for the average American doctoral student.

Thank you very much for your review. It's encouraging reading that you are so appreciative of the work done on physics and of the experiments taking place here. We understand that the cost of living in Geneva is rather high which is why CERN's remunerations are aligned to those standards. ...

I worked at CERN for less than a year

    Pros

Cern - The European Organization for Nuclear Research is a European research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. It’s an amazing place to work. People from all over the world come to work here. It’s located in Geneva area on the border between Switzerland and France. The two CERN sites, Prévessin and Meyrin have the Jura Mountains on one side and Geneva and the Alps in the...

I can not think of any negative things about working at CERN. Some of the older buildings are barracks and doesn't look very nice, but they are constantly renovating and improving all the buildings on the site.

    I worked at CERN

    Pros

It pays well, but Geneva is expensive.

    Cons

Management is driven by political rather than scientific motives. Many collaborators are willing to sacrifice scientific accuracy and correctness, in whole or in part, in order to meet their next job application deadline. Service work is not appreciated or rewarded, even if it concerns work that is absolutely crucial for the correct functioning of the experiment. Permanent positions are often not awarded to the best and...

We are genuinely saddened that you have left CERN with such a negative experience. We are shocked by what we read as Respect is a core foundation to what CERN is. Be assured that we strive to ensure people are supported and heard and it is unfortunate for us that we learn of this ...

    I worked at CERN

    Pros

You work with smart collegues, have an interesting working environment, top notch research, good tax-free salary, cheap mandatory health insurance, young teams.

    Cons

The infastructure and offices are very old and should be renovated. The offices are far from Geneva, work might require a car due to travel/staying on the French side.

    Advice to Management

Consider making the work environment more dynamic and interesting for people to stay. Currently the goal for everyone is to get an indefinite contract that, once you get it, makes it impossible for them to fire you.

    Pros

It is the biggest research laboratory in the world. You can work on a research or engineering project in Physics or Computing from 8 to 13 weeks. Food is good and relatively cheap in the restaurants. There are lectures and lot of programmes to take part. You can work in the countryside instead of a metropolis.

    Cons

Salary is smaller compared to other Computer Engineer intern jobs in expensive regions like Geneva.
