I worked at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

    - Good salary (not taxed!) for young people in mid 20s. - Good work-life balance, a lot of holidays, no overtime. - A lot of autonomy and flat management structure. - There are some potentially interesting projects. - Reasonable approach to technologies - there is no "hype driven development" and jumping on every new javascript framework, but technologies are modern and people are generally keeping track of changes...

    Cons

    - Very strong separation between Staff and non-Staff (students, associates, fellows etc), but only when it comes to benefits and not workload or responsibilities. You might be doing the same thing as the guy next to you, but earning 2-3 times less, simply because he's on a different contract. - Zero correlation between work performance and contract duration or conditions for non-Staff. You might be the best employee,...

    Advice to Management

Revise contracting policy of the organisation. The fact that people get "lifetime" contracts, from which they can't be fired, is not normal or healthy in any way. Especially considering CERN handles all stages of many projects, and different people are needed for design, different people for construction and different people for maintenance and operations.

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Incredible environment. Excellent salaries and health insurance. Additionally, it's like working in the heart of Europe.

    Cons

Permanent contract could arrive, basically based on a lottery (quota, luck, and finally merit), only after 8 years! E.g. After having been a technical student, a fellow, then a staff for 5 years and then a second time staff for three years (for a total of 11 years serving), my group wasn't able to open a permanent position for me, and I was therefore forced to leave.

    Advice to Management

Change the contracts to be really based on merit and not on a lottery. It should be easier to fire, but also to have a permanent contract, like in regular enterprises.

      I worked at CERN full-time

      Pros

      - A very competitive salary for most people. - Multiculturual and multinational organization working with people from all over Europe. - A very generous holiday scheme (6 weeks + christmas break) and insurance scheme. - You get time to develop yourself and to steer your work in your direction. Not so many strict deadlines like in consulting for example. - Close to the breathtaking alps.

      Cons

      - It's very hard to get a permanent staff contract. If you start out as Technical Student, then go on to Fellow, then to staff, you will have to work 8-11 years for the organization before you can be considered for a permanent position. Everyone knows this and I think it leads to unhealthy competition between people on limited contracts, it's a lot of prestige going around. ...

      Advice to Management

      - Think about what the contract policy does with the distribution of nationalities. - Crack down harder when you see that a group or section has a lot of people with the same nationality. - Debrief people that quit.
