Former Employee - Research Fellow in Geneva

I worked at CERN full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I've been a research fellow at CERN in the Physics department and it was a great experience, both on the human and the professional side. The main pros: *) solid standards in terms of scientific quality and values *) extensive research freedom given to the researcher *) the average level of the team is very high, offering great opportunities to learn from colleagues and to grow professionally. *) a strong...

    Cons

The requirements on the research staff are also very high. They're either set explicitly by the supervisor or implicitly through (healthy) competition with your team mates. This is not an absolute problem in itself (although the work-life balance can be very poor at times), if not that it is not well matched by opportunities of a long-term career in the organization. Entering the fellowship program is hard. Getting a...

    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at CERN full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Salary is OK provided your line manager likes you

    Cons

Pension fund not compatible with anything outside, so not getting permanent position means loosing all CERN contribution when leaving company.

    Advice to Management

No idea what could help there

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice place to work, international environment, relaxed colleagues. Many positions related with new technologies and research. Flexible schedule, lots of holidays, excellent health insurance.

    Cons

Much easier to get a job if you have been a student here before. Most of the offers are for only 2-year contracts, it is almost impossible to get a permanent position. High rotation of personnel given the type of contracts.
