I worked at CERN full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

    - good salary - no stress

    Cons

    - your boss needs to show you that is your boss - people fight for positions instead of working together - you see how much of public money is wasted here (which is actually also a plus to realize that) - many times, more important is your powerpoint presentation then you actual work (it's worse then in corporations where I used to work) - general atmosphere that doesn't motivate you to work - bad work organisation...

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

    - nice work and great technical environment - flexible schedules - restaurants and sport clubs are great meeting points for socializing, the food less great - good benefits - it is definitely one of the greatest opportunities for graduates. Not as great if you hit the age mark of 35 without a serious contract.

    Cons

    - short-term contracts - hard to see good people leaving for no convincing reason - sometimes dull conversation topics based on national stereotypes

    Advice to Management

HR does a great job, give them more power to implement policies.

Thank you very much for your comment. We are glad to learn you appreciated CERN's diverse workplace environment. Opportunities for awarding long term contracts has considerably increased with a recently revised contract policy.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits and work/life balance: 30 days of leave per year, plus 2 weeks chrismtas breaks. Many clubs offering organised spare time activities (ski club, cycling club, game club, etc). Shuttle service operated by the organisation.

    Cons

Hard to step up from a fixed term contract these days. Some offices/facilites are a bit shabby, understandably the money is needed more elsewhere. One company operates all the 3 restaurants on campus, not enough variety.

    Advice to Management

I don't have an advice right now. Most of the things I consider drawbacks are not not something the managmeent can easily change.

    CERN Response

    November 2, 2016

Thank you very much for your review. CERN was established in 1954 and has been developing ever since so improving the infrastructure on a site of this scale is one of our main concerns and something we continually work on. We recently reviewed our contract policy with an aim of increasing ...

Former Employee - Research Fellow in Geneva

I worked at CERN full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

I've been a research fellow at CERN in the Physics department and it was a great experience, both on the human and the professional side. The main pros: *) solid standards in terms of scientific quality and values *) extensive research freedom given to the researcher *) the average level of the team is very high, offering great opportunities to learn from colleagues and to grow professionally. *) a strong...

    Cons

The requirements on the research staff are also very high. They're either set explicitly by the supervisor or implicitly through (healthy) competition with your team mates. This is not an absolute problem in itself (although the work-life balance can be very poor at times), if not that it is not well matched by opportunities of a long-term career in the organization. Entering the fellowship program is hard. Getting a...

I worked at CERN full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Nice working environment with people from different countries. Cutting-edge technologies. Quite a lot of freedom. Ideal place for a young professional. Generous with the technical trainings. Lots of holidays.

    Cons

Too political. Short term contracts. Tons of dinosaurs with golden parachute contracts. No long term career vision.

    Advice to Management

Tons of brilliant people left in favour of less qualified people because of the political way of managing things
