I have been working at CFA Institute full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, the chance to make important contributions to society, pleasant culture where you really feel they care about you.

    Cons

Slow to make decisions; working with people in our other offices around the world can occasionally lead to odd working hours and a lot of travel, although not everyone sees a lot of travel as a "con."

    Advice to Management

I love that you're working so hard on improving employee engagement. Keep it up! The strategic planning cycle needs to be simplified, explained more clearly, and the deadlines need to be announced much sooner than they have been in the past.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Wonderful, smart, friendly people working for an important global cause. Great work/life balance, office environment, and in a wonderful city. Reasonable pay, but likely the above things are more the draw.

    Cons

Feels very top heavy. Often-changing leaders cascade change downward and outward. I feel. Seems like people just don't feel there is a career path they can easily envision.

    Advice to Management

Less sweeping change every couple of years (for a very successful company) would probably net less employee negativity. As I see it, personal, then institutional uncertainty has been the cause of disgruntled folks in most cases

    Pros

They take good care of their employees! Good salary. Great benefits. Professional atmosphere.

    Cons

The structure of the organization has gone through recent changes so things are still settling into place.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Super rewarding mission, well-resourced organization, ambitious new leadership with appointment of new CEO in 2015. Chance to contribute to building the profession.

    Cons

Lots of turnover at leadership level as company orients toward more aggressive service, greater leadership role, in a dynamic industry. Adjustment to change is not complete (is it ever?). But devoting effort to getting it right.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on, and invest in, improving culture, processes, and talent development.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time

    Pros

Mission driven culture, very smart people, amazing benefits, beautiful location, flexibility with work and room for creativity. There are a lot of pros! One of the best places I have worked with regards purely to the work itself, pay, care given and benefits.

    Cons

People have a habit of vilifying one another. There are so many disparaging comments said about one another it borders on the unprofessional. Ego and strong personalities make some departments very difficult. I was warned by my prior supervisor before coming here about the "mean girl culture" at CFA. Unfortunately it turned out to be true...

    Advice to Management

Don't disparage one another. Allow people to work remotely when available. People appreciate each other more when they are together as a team.

I worked at CFA Institute full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing bennifits. Other departments seemed great and fun.

    Cons

The "out dated" management and their customer service style. The teams negativity and thrill for gossip (mean girls club!). Not allowed to work on projects so you watch TV all day verses gaining skills and developing professionally. Not open to improvement. Micro managed: (check your clock in times, lunch times, break times, when you take calls, do emails, ect). Management encourages the negative work environment by not resolving the issues and just "talking about it".

    Advice to Management

Learn to accept change. Let your team get involved and help other departments on projects as needed and requested. We are there to learn and grow. I didn't apply to watch Netflix all day and worry about what gossip people were chatting about.

    Pros

Benefits and Culture, travel opportunities - all though some seem to have an unfair advantage.

    Cons

advancement is hard. It's encouraged to promote from within yet so many external candidates are hired

    Advice to Management

Thanks for caring about your employees! Some at director level should learn more from upper management.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

CFA Institute is a mission driven organization that offers its employees the best of both the nonprofit and corporate worlds. Supporting education and ethics in investing is a laudable goal which makes the work rewarding. A global organization headquartered in a small city allows employees to have a nice mix of a peaceful hometown and access to a world of professional experiences through travel. Good work is well reward with recognition and promotion and all employees have competitive benefits including tuition support.

    Cons

Global organizations never sleep, so meetings regularly occur outside of work hours. Many people in Charlottesville do not know anything about CFA Institute, so there is plenty of elevator speech practice.

    Advice to Management

Think creatively about increasing brand recognition in Charlottesville.
Clearly state the out of hours time commitment when recruiting and hiring salaried employees.
Tell Glass Door that Jeffrey Diermeier is no longer our CEO...it is Paul Smith.

    Pros

A mission driven organization committed to excellence, ethics and education in the Investment Management industry. Collaborative, supportive and caring culture. Lots of very smart people, nice work-life balance and excellent employee benefits. Global workforce with headquarters in the award winning livable city of Charlottesville, VA. Emphasis on servant leadership. Willing to invest in development of employees.

    Cons

High growth brings new challenges. Recent change in leadership makes for uncertain cultural change but seems to be settling down.

    Advice to Management

Continue to emphasize internal promotions and movement.
