I have been working at CFA Institute full-time

    Pros

Excellent values and opportunity to grow the organization, the profession and personally

    Cons

Main office in Charlottesville- I moved here to work at CFA Institute and the organization is rife with elitist academic types who have little real world experience. Simply knowing the definition of a term is not proven ability to implement - if more employees here understood this there would be more accountability for their words and behavior in the workplace.

    Advice to Management

Hire people with investment and business experience and hold the opinionated, self-centered types accountable for the negative and at times hostile environment they create.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

    - Benefits are extensive - Salaries are higher than average - Colleagues are qualified. - It's a global company so you get to work with all kinds of people from all over the world.

    Cons

    - There is A LOT of change. Some people find this difficult. - Sometimes there can be a lack of transparency. - Because the company is global, you are always "on," addressing issues around the world at day and night.

    Advice to Management

    - Employee engagement means listening, as well as telling. - Major swings in leadership can really affect morale.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time

    Pros

Great benefits Flexible schedule Travel opportunities Nice people Cafeteria onsite

    Cons

Too many competing priorities Management is constantly changing their minds Secret layoffs Spend money frivolously

    Advice to Management

Think about what you’d actually like to accomplish and do it. Stop assigning tasks for your entertainment that have nothing to do with the mission of the organization. It’s a waste of time and money and it burns people out.

    CFA Institute Response

August 14, 2018Director, Global Talent Acquisition

There is no question that CFA Institute has an ambitious and challenging strategic plan. We are a global organization that is growing at double-digit rates and sometimes we have to move at speeds that are not comfortable for everyone. We undertake careful due diligence before embarking ...

I worked at CFA Institute full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

    - Pockets of highly educated and very talented people - Unbeatable benefits in Charlottesville - Global travel for certain positions

    Cons

    - Egregious review process: zero effort made to reset expectations or coach underperforming employees (and there are a number of long-term Directors who don't pull their weight), coupled with a secretive layoff process - Politics, politics, politics - Bloated organizational structure: more Director level positions than lower level positions to do the work - Disrespect for FTE skillsets and overreliance on vendors ...

    Advice to Management

Either stop constantly reorganizing or invest in an actual change management program. Set expectations for your employees and give them a little credit. Stop gaslighting employees at town halls and blaming an introverted or inflexible organizational culture for employee dissatisfaction. The problem starts at the top.

    Downward spiral continues

I worked at CFA Institute full-time

      Pros

Has to be the best paid gig in Charlottesville. Good 401 K match, and year end 401K top-up. Benefits are good, IF you live in VA.

      Cons

Morale continues to weaken. Leadership is mostly a joke, especially the MDs that make up the so-called “leadership team.” Ridiculous comp structure based entirely on your title and not on accomplishments. Downright mean and illogical performance evaluation process. Prizes new hires over existing staff to an inordinate extent. Especially in the Marketing and relationship management areas. The RM team is run by a baffoon...

August 14, 2018Director, Global Talent Acquisition

We are sorry that you have a negative view of CFA Institute and its leadership but cannot agree with your suggestion that we are in a “downward spiral”. Based on our recent Employee Engagement survey, the majority of our employees would also not agree with your perceptions. There ...

I worked at CFA Institute full-time for more than 9 years

      Pros

Great benefits, talented (though underappreciated) people, fantastic town,

      Cons

The CEO and senior leadership have ruined almost everything that was good about CFA Institue. Their arrogance and ego and belief that they know everything, and the CEO's talking out of both sides of his mouth have damaged morale terribly and all the good people are running for the exits. The CMO is a particular tool, who has made the lives of people in Services Delivery miserable.

      Advice to Management

Find some humility in yourself and undo the harm you have done. You may be fantastic at finance, but you are completely ignorant about the value of human beings.

I have been working at CFA Institute full-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

Lots of positive changes in the culture over the last couple of years! New leadership in several areas has provided opportunities for staff to grow, provide honest feedback to management, and influence organizational goals.

      Cons

There are still some silos that need to be broken down, but that is already being addressed.
