    Pros

Collaboration and teamwork were once the order of the day but the financial decline has caused employee paranoia and fear.

    Cons

Really poor management. They blame the decline on oil prices, and, in large part that is a major factor is the decline. However, poor management has placed this company in this position many times in the past. There is no plan for the future, and no way to survive a severe economic downturn so therefore, no job security.

    I worked at CGG full-time

    Pros

May be ok for geophysics and other related majors to begin career in seismic imaging/reservoir characterization/interpretation.

Flexible with work hours to accommodate personal issues. But, again, many other companies nowadays have similar policies.

    Cons

Except for may be geophysics/geology majors, very bad career choice for others.

In particular, don't advise computer science/electrical/electronics majors to come over here for any role. You will end up with programming/tech skills atrophy and no good prospects in future. The seismic imaging role is dull and dumb. Frankly, anyone can do it and you don't need specialized knowledge for it. Even the programming role is nothing exciting (legacy code, poor architecture, tools and practices), If you are smart; unless you desperately need a job; be patient and aim for core tech/software industry.

    Otherwise;

management and promotions are politically motivated with favoritism and no meritocracy. This is to be expected since smart people won't stay.

Tip to new hires: don't forget to tour the company and notice unusually high percentage of some nationalities. If you are not the same, expect poor career prospects/promotions.

Poor work environment and interaction among colleagues, specially in the seismic image processing department.

The environment here is not intellectually challenging/exciting. May be this is because seismic imaging industry is mature and not many exciting things to be done anyway.

Unwritten rule: international employees are forced to work long hours for sake of sponsorship/green card. Hardly, any US national would work these long hours.

No honesty in work (results can be manipulated to look good).

No transparent performance review: it is just done for its sake.

    Pros

fast learning curve at the beginning for all non-geophysicist major employer
low salary for entry level, but could get raised faster than other companies.

    Cons

Fear driven working environment, firing old/handicap/boss in-favored processing imager without any legit reason, while still hiring cheap labor - new graduates
Super long working hour. There are always people worked from 9am until 5am next day. High stress, high anxiety. Some leader will call you anytime for work.
Hiring most international Phd students, because they can push them work hard for the sake of Green Card.
No career development for seismic imager/processor. Once you are in-favored by your director, there are no chance for any promotion.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep a little humanities in in the USI department.
Once most employer get the way out of the company, the business model of the company will collapse.

I worked at CGG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good 401k / health benefits.
    - Free catered lunch on certain days of the week.

    Cons

    - The company culture here was arguably the worst I have ever experienced. There is absolutely no sense of camaraderie within most teams.
    - Promotions and salary increases are distributed based on favoritism and politics rather than merit (I've observed this on multiple occasions).
    - Work-life balance is abysmal, and leaves a lot to be desired. As an employee here, you are constantly put under pressure to work extra hours and achieve unrealistic goals within tight deadlines, and when you fail to achieve those unrealistic goals, more work is added to your plate as punishment. I can't imagine a more demoralizing way to treat the human beings that you call employees.

    Advice to Management

Offering a generous 401k package does not compensate for the sub-par work environment that you have at your company. I would suggest you to take a look at some of the more systemic problems that your employees are facing day in, day out, and devise a plan to improve the conditions moving forward.

    Pros

Ok if you are brand new to processing

    Cons

Management are clueless - have no idea what is going on or how people feel. Horrible culture. Management only care about themselves. Overall not worth sticking around. Free food and activities don't make up for lack of leadership.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your office and talk to to people for a change. Don't be so arrogant and uncaring.

I worked at CGG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

.near China town, easy to find cheap food near the office

    Cons

.load of work, usually people work more than 10 hours a day plus weekends.
.old East Germany spy network, someone is watching every move you make. eg. number of washing breaks, how long was daily lunch break you take and when did you come to and leave from work etc. You get rewarded for reporting someone who is late for work.
    .Houston version of Foxconn.

    Advice to Management

A lot of the managers have violate labor law in CGGVeritas. eg. Many managers threaten to fire people if they don't work long overtime days after days. I am surprised no one has reported the poor work condition to Department of Labor.
