I worked at CGG as a contractor

    Pros

Surrounded by very highly qualified and technical experts who are creative and eager to find innovative solutions

    Cons

Because it is in the oil and gas industry, it is subject to the highs and lows of the energy sector

    Advice to Management

Listen to many of the good ideas that flow from the workers downstream. They feel that often there is a disconnect between upper management and the experts you are at ground zero

I worked at CGG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Exposure to technology and worldwide geology. When I was there medical and 401k were great. For some reason they were open to new ideas for uses of non-geophysical technology, I.e. GIS for one example.

    Cons

Can be micro managed at times. Could be tight with the money also, travel and raises. Unless directly involved in sales did not recognize value of technical interaction with geoscience community.

I have been working at CGG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    They Have Great Health Benefits
They seem to keep up with technology and providing what is needed to perform your work

    Cons

Low pay (in comparison to industry averages)
    Bonuses are highly structured
Internationally political (Veritas Vs. CGG) (French Vs. American)
The company seems to hire externally for promotions. (Either from another company or division)

    Advice to Management

Reward your employees more. Acknowledge the hard work we all tirelessly put in, regardless of the pay grade. Moral boosts are needed during these times (picnics, events etc)

I worked at CGG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay and bonus structure. Benefits are good. They run it a bit like a startup, with lots of food, gym on site, and valet services for things like running errands, shopping, car washes, etc.

    Cons

Very competitive. Regional offices are pitted against each other. Not a collaborative research environment. Long hours are expected to be put in. Researchers are not necessarily required to have knowledge of geophysics, but if you can write code you are automatically a "researcher". Senior management has no strategy or vision for how to develop technology. They rely on the fact they can throw lots of people at a problem and churn out results quickly rather than focusing on quality and what can differentiate them in the long run.

    Advice to Management

Try fostering a sense of collaboration, or all the young talent you hire will tire of the grind and leave if they haven't already been soured by the hellish cycles in the oil business.
