I worked at CGG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay and bonus structure. Benefits are good. They run it a bit like a startup, with lots of food, gym on site, and valet services for things like running errands, shopping, car washes, etc.

    Cons

Very competitive. Regional offices are pitted against each other. Not a collaborative research environment. Long hours are expected to be put in. Researchers are not necessarily required to have knowledge of geophysics, but if you can write code you are automatically a "researcher". Senior management has no strategy or vision for how to develop technology. They rely on the fact they can throw lots of people at a problem and churn out results quickly rather than focusing on quality and what can differentiate them in the long run.

    Advice to Management

Try fostering a sense of collaboration, or all the young talent you hire will tire of the grind and leave if they haven't already been soured by the hellish cycles in the oil business.

I worked at CGG (More than a year)

    Pros

The upper management seem to know what's going on in the business and are creative in their pursuits.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the upper management doesn't know what's going on with the middle management. They will be disrespectful, throw you under the bus and even will torpedo to make themselves look good, even if you do as your told.

    Advice to Management

Look closely at the mid level managers and find out how they're actually doing and how they actually treat their teams. If they don't people will continue to quit for a better quality of company.

I have been working at CGG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A professional, strategicly oriented technology company with good growth opportunities in providing new technologies to increase productivity and reduce costs in exploration and development.

    Cons

Historic volatility in oil & gas prices require preplanning which can include potential staff reductions as the company responds to potential downturns in market conditions.

    Advice to Management

When the market upturn occurs, be resilient by implementing intense target focused training programs of four months duration taught by internal subject matter experts to take new staff and quickly create new growth in revenues from high margin, low capital requirement integrated services in Geology, Geophysics and Reservoir.

    Pros

You really learn a lot from people with diverse backgrounds, and co-workers are very helpful, you can learn a lot of technical stuff in here.

    Cons

Overall it's not too bad, however, communication between difference departments could potentially improve more, its always an issue once the company have too many different departments.

    Advice to Management

Some managers are really good, and you can see they really lead the teams very well. Some people are not only good at doing their own work, but also good at leading the teams.

I have been working at CGG full-time

    Pros

Very flexible hours. They know that life happens, and are very understanding when issues arise they may require you to be late/leave early/call in. Excellent benefits. My wife works in the medical field and can't believe how good our insurance is. Very blessed to work for this company.

    Cons

Oil price is down, causing the company to tighten its belt and cut fat. No raises this year and many were laid off. The company does a good job at taking care of everyone though.

    Advice to Management

A lot of employees believe in this company and are working hard to help keep it afloat and viable. This faith and perseverance should be aknowledged and rewarded when the market improves. I talk with many employees who have good ideas that may prove to be helpful. I think if the company utilized a platform to tap into this knowledge it could be a significant source of inspiration (read: cost savings/process improvement)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Co-workers knowledgeable and enthusiastic, committed to solving the problems that are a part of the business.

    Cons

High pressure to achieve individual targets based on global performance, which the individual has little to no input on. Constant disconnect between Corporate and Division strategies.

    Advice to Management

Implement and maintain clear, company wide strategies. Empower employees by maintaining a transparent work place. Managers' doors should always be open, literally.
