I worked at CGG (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Collaboration and teamwork were once the order of the day but the financial decline has caused employee paranoia and fear.

    Cons

Really poor management. They blame the decline on oil prices, and, in large part that is a major factor is the decline. However, poor management has placed this company in this position many times in the past. There is no plan for the future, and no way to survive a severe economic downturn so therefore, no job security.

    Pros

Many smart people to learn from. Lots of cool technology that you get to play with, and opportunities to come up with your own ideas (depending on your manager).

Health benefits are pretty good, and the pay isn't terrible for someone starting out.

    Cons

Work/life balance is atrocious. 70+ Hours per week.

Depending on your manager, it may be tolerable. Some managers are great and get you excited about work, even if it requires a big (read overtime) time commitment. Others enjoy cracking the whip even when work is getting done, constant threats to fire you, etc. It doesn't matter if you're more productive than others.

Politics are abysmal here. There was no apparent meritocracy. H1B shop -- almost everyone in processing is on an H1B visa. The starting salary is exactly the H1B minimum (coincidence?!)

    Advice to Management

Fear is an effective motivator for only so long. Firing so many people so quickly encourages your best and brightest to leave.

I have been working at CGG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    They Have Great Health Benefits
They seem to keep up with technology and providing what is needed to perform your work

    Cons

Low pay (in comparison to industry averages)
    Bonuses are highly structured
Internationally political (Veritas Vs. CGG) (French Vs. American)
The company seems to hire externally for promotions. (Either from another company or division)

    Advice to Management

Reward your employees more. Acknowledge the hard work we all tirelessly put in, regardless of the pay grade. Moral boosts are needed during these times (picnics, events etc)
