It's employment and a paycheck. That's about all on the positive side.

Utterly incompetent senior management. Non-technical people making technical decisions. Did I mention incompetent senior management? Add duplicitous: in private: "We fully expect employees to work 55+ hours a week, nothing should get in the way of completing a project and we expect you to forfeit time off to finish those projects" / in public: "...Your health is important and we don't want you working excessive hours, we want you taking time off because you earned it." Garbage insurance plan with a ridiculously high ($4K) deductible. The company saves some money and passes those savings onto the board of directors. No raises. No bonuses. Non-competitive salary offers. Bleeding talent and bringing on subpar sub-contractors to stop the bleeding. Run in the other direction. As fast as possible.

Bad behavior is rewarded. When senior management was made aware, it was swept under the rug.

Pros

As a large company, there are many opportunities to work on a variety of different projects. There are also many opportunities to work with senior management and people with different skill sets. CGI offers more flexibility in shifting to new roles-technical roles to project management roles, for example. CGI is also very flexible and allows employees to work remotely.

Cons

There is a lack of mentoring at CGI so there is a lot of self teaching involved. This is fine if you are lucky enough to get a good manager who can suggest training or if you get on good projects. As with any large company, office politics and relationships with senior management often complicate projects more than necessary.

I worked primarily across Canada and the people were magnificent.

Senior management, especially out of Montreal, was clubby and clueless.

Long hours, poor raises. High turnover with technical resources and Senior Management. Lack of support by Senior Managers with client issues. With long working hours difficult to take advantage of training programs. Communications between functional teams and Senior Management is poor.

- It's a good company if you are not a very smart person and not fit for companies like IBM, Accenture, Google, etc. - Generous pay if you are white or worship big bosses

CGI might be a great company, but following observations are based on my experiences in some of the US offices: - Treat "non white" employees as workers and will never give them senior management positions. - Most of the people are average or below average. They are not qualified to successfully deliver large custom software development projects. - Most of their success stories are on the projects where they were sub to companies like IBM and Accenture. - Some of the US offices are run like family owned businesses. Not very professional. - No a process oriented company. I think CGI is a CMMI level 3 company. - And many more when I compare CGI with similar companies. Bottom line - Do not join CGI if you are a smart person and believe in innovation. Do not expect good salary raises and/ or promotion if you are not white or close to senior management.
