I worked at CHEST full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work with other queers, you get to listen to therapy sessions. they have created a minority interest group (since management doesn't use the feedback from it, it basically serves only as a space to vent, which can be good sometimes)

    Cons

poverty wages, favoritism, mistreatment of queer femmes, way outdated materials (like from 2003).. No research with women participants. CHEST is under a lengthy investigation with no end in sight.

    Advice to Management

You can't just hire women and POC to increase diversity while treating them badly. That's tokenization. Hiring women and POC at a historically non-diverse organization without any structural changes is doing more harm than good.

    I worked at CHEST

    Pros

It's nice to work with queer and queer-minded staff. Most coworkers and middle management are friendly, sex positive and harm reduction oriented. You get to talk about and study people's sex lives and drug use, which is very interesting. If given the chance, you can interview participants of different backgrounds, which is also very interesting.

    Cons

Interns are almost all women, but they mostly hire men. Men get promoted, but women need a strong advocate or over-qualification to get hired in the first place. The boss's door is open for male employees to come and chat, whereas women need to go through a hierarchical email chain to make an appointment. Research opportunities, like authorship and study development, are political. If the boss likes you, then you will...

    Positive Outlook

I worked at CHEST full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

CHEST is a weigh station for those seeking to narrow their interests or gain early exposure to topics ranging from counseling to qualitative to quantitative research methodologies. It will give newcomers the opportunity to build projects from the ground up, and in so doing hones the kind of skill sets that can translate into many different fields.

    Cons

CHEST is a sink or swim environment, and it lacks a sense of professionalism. In order to be successful at this enterprise, the employee needs to be a self-starter, but also must have the courage to set boundaries with his/her tasks, and to ask for help if needed.

    Advice to Management

I found myself feeling discouraged by the lack of training and the low morale when I worked here. I highly recommend that management consider reinforcing the kind of parameters that will encourage more professional behavior.
