There are so many pros and cons

    Jan 17, 2022 - Medical Scribe

    Pros

You will get a lot sharper. I worked at city MD for a year and gained so many skills and knowledge that the premed curriculum couldn't teach me. City MD gives its scribes a lot of freedom. I was allowed to talk to patients without anyone present, perform procedures like venipunctures, ekgs, and depending on the provider they will let you do some medical procedures. You will have access to so many doctors and PAs, so its pretty easy to get a LOR. You can also ask the providers questions about your future career and general questions about medicine. You will honestly learn so much if you work here. The long hours are not too bad if you keep yourself busy. City MD is amazing for experience.

    Cons

The covid testing limits your learning and thats what city md has turned into, a covid testing site. Alot of people who do covid testing are not even sick they just get it for travel, work, or mass gatherings. The providers could be rude and management can treat you like a robot sometimes. The salary is insulting considering how much work you do. Scribes are the backbone of every city md yet they are payed so little. My friends in tech who did chill internships got paid more and treated better. City MD does not care about their scribes and you shouldn't care about City MD. Get the experience and leave after a year. I appreciate City MD for giving me the opportunity for clinical experience, but they overworked me. Smart scribes wise up and don't stay more than 1 year unless your site is chill or you are trying to move up to management.

    Unpleasant work experience

Sep 14, 2015 - Medical Scribe in New York, NY

    Pros

Pay is decent. Looks good on resume. Most people who work as scribes here are pre-med/pre-PA - passing time to either gain enough hours to get into school or trying to get into residency. .

    Cons

They tell you they care about patients and about you, but when it comes down to it, its all about the #'s and $$$. Management is constantly micromanaging and breathing down your neck to get higher patient volume because all locations are competing against each other. Since its all about the numbers and every scribe is tracked by patient # and time, all scribes are competing against each other for the highest number of patients in the shortest amount of time. Made for a rather unpleasant work experience since everyone was out for themselves and were quick to throw you under the bus. No work/life balance as they expect you to be a slave to whatever the business needs.

    Pros

    - Great stepping stone into the medical field - Work directly with physicians and PAs Only work here if you wish to become a PA/physician yourself

    Cons

    - Many, many physicians and PAs are rude, awful and will speak down to you - Long hours - Horrible pay - Work overload (Neither the physicians, PAs, medical assistant or X-ray tech do as much work as the scribes)

    Decent for temporary situation

    Pros

Some sites have great teams. Everything is quick and fast paced. Coffee and snacks are free. If you have a good team then everything runs smoothly. Working 3-4 days a week is great so that you have the rest of the week off. I don't mind the long hours. Clinical exposure is great. The benefits are decent, could be better.

    Cons

The pay. The pay is NOT ADEQUATE for the level of skill that is required. The pay is incredibly less for the amount of knowledge and work that scribes have to do. Some managers like to play favorites which is not acceptable. The company should look into paying employees what they deserve.

Toxic environment, not worth it even for pre-med or pre-PA

    Sep 30, 2017 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

There are none, really just none

    Cons

Toxic environment. Company does not practice what they preach (kindness). Come here if you’re pre-med or pre-PA to see the kind of care you should aim to never provide. Staff including providers will make jokes and judgements about patients right outside their rooms. Staff is not supportive of each other and it is just a race to get out the door. Scribes especially don’t work together and if one is done they’ll leave the other on their own as they go home for the night. Care rendered by providers is subpar is not even “care”. Providers care solely about visit times and will make conclusions before in house tests are complete, or they will read them before manufacturer’s guidelines say to. Hours are unfair and there is no seniority. Expect to work extra because someone gets a weekend off.

Do not work for this company ...

    Pros

You get good experience by shadowing doctors

    Cons

Worse company to work with. To be honest, there is alot of favoritism in the company. There is no respect for scribes. The providers were very rude. I had really bad experience with a provider but the HR only heared it just to know and did nothing abt it. I felt very low at that time. They pay you less and ask you to do more. I dont mind even if i get paid less but one thing I must say, when there is no respect , you shoulnt work at that place.

The transition point can be rough at first. Pay is great for medical scribes in general but it doesnt seem adequate with the heavy workloads

    Pros

-amazing co scribes -good experience -snacks are alright -something to put on resume

    Cons

-rude providers -overwork the scribe -everything is your fault, if the provider is too slow, its your fault, if the computer doesnt work, its your fault -management plays favoritism, the favorites of the managers can be late from lunch, be slow and sot around but if you do it, they will call you into a room and you will be reprimanded -you will work past 8 pm most days
