I worked at CN full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Second to non retirement plan and health benefits. THAT'S IT!!!

    Cons

Lack of work life balance. Local management always wanted to show their subordinate who was boss at all cost! It was a toxic and cutthroat environment. Lots of jobs within the company, but if you weren't in good and a yes man you would never move up. Pay wasn't that great after all the railroad tier 1 and tier 2 taxes and retirement. You needed what we called fire insurance which is basically a type of job insurance that...

    Advice to Management

Bring in fresh blood, people that aren't already corrupt by the toxic environment that exist and get rid of the buddy buddy system. Hire people that are qualified and the best candidates for the job and not your friend that already has issues with other employees.

I have been working at CN full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great pay and easy work. Have the chance to put in plenty of overtime to make some big bucks. Great stock options.

    Cons

Management is horrible. Will take multiple years before ever seeing decent rest days or even 1st shift. Could be run a little different.

    Advice to Management

Know the jobs at which you manage or just shut up.

I have been working at CN full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Its union, with decent benefits and a pension. Shift work. Good group of guys to work with.

    Cons

A severe bullying culture, constant degradation, being made to feel like you are useless. They promote a "safe work culture" and press you to work beyond ability, very fast, with unrealistic goals. "If it rolls in, it'll roll out". Employees made to feel insignificant and replaceable. I'm literally a number.

    Advice to Management

Stop the work harassment. Treat employees like people and show some respect. Stop the workplace bullying on all levels (or at least try).

I have been working at CN full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good wage. Stock option.

    Cons

Unsafe. Poorly maintained equipment. Not enough equipment. Constant payroll errors. Unqualified management/Supervisors Unattainable productivity expectations - resulting in employees being told to charge for fraudulent repairs to make up time. The company not registering "apprentices" with the trades college ie. Not a real apprenticeship - just paying employees less for the same work. Must provide own work...

I have been working at CN

    Pros

When you get to work with someone who also wants to work. The job is incredible.

    Cons

Unskilled employees on both management and union side.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent people for both union and management. Pay management more so we can get more skilled employees to apply.

I have been working at CN

    Pros

none come to mind except for the close relationships forged on the battlefield of managerial abuse that is rampant at cn. this company was created to bring the country of canada together and provide goods and services to canadians. many employees are third and even forth generation railroaders and the experiance they ( we) have imparted to the new employees is inspiring in light of the animosity that has endured in the...

    Cons

a manager, on his first day of a new assignment calls his employees together and says: i'm the new warden, points to his strategicly placed supervisors and says: these are the guards and you are the inmates. what's not to like about working for these people . if you are comfortable being refered to as a snow negro or an inmate then cn maybe the right fit for you. they will however promote apprentices who have one week...
