I have been working at COUNCIL FOR EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL USA part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The mission of encouraging a lifelong journey of global peace and understanding is prevalent everyday at CETUSA. I have worked with this program since the late 90s and find them the best in student exchange industry. I have worked with two other organizations previously and would only work or host with CETUSA ever again. I have hosted many times and have been overly satisfied with all of my dealings as a host family.

    Cons

You must be a self-starter, mission-minded, teenager-understanding, culture-looving individual to work in this industry. If you are not or are looking for a paycheck and no productive work, this job is not for you. You must perform to be paid but that is only fair in any job. This can be a stressful job at times, you are dealing with multiple cultures, people in general and a desire to promote world peace. After 26 years...

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve the training for the local coordinators in the field. Continue to give full unbiased support to the field, the schools and the staff. Because if you don't have them, you have NO exchange program. Thank you for the heart you have for this program and all of the people involved around the world, but especially here in the USA.

I have been working at COUNCIL FOR EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL USA for less than a year

    Pros

This is a company to work for if you like making a difference for people and enjoy working with and for people. You don't have a rigid schedule, but you do your own planning for meetings with schools and families. You get to learn more about the world in the process.

    Cons

The few people that I have had contact with that are within the company treat this as if they are sales managers rather than social managers. They are so desperate to earn the income provided by the company as an incentive, and in turn use this as incentive for their local coordinators, that they end up relentlessly pushing and pushing as if to put people between a rock and a hard place, but they don't seem to actually...

    Advice to Management

Check your regional managers, and double check your local coordinators, make sure both sets are in the business for the actual purpose of the business. The goal of achieving "global peace and understanding" seems to be lost on those who would rather make referrals for coordinators and then push those coordinators to "sell, sell, sell" but conveniently use the terms "place, place, place" so that they can get that 100$...

I worked at COUNCIL FOR EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL USA part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great trip rewards if you can place enough students. Most people are pleasant and nice. Opportunity to help students have a wonderful exchange. Periodically have placement bonuses (the more you place the more the bonus). Great job if you have a friendly community (that has the spare room & bed) and you can place 4 students a month.

    Cons

Too much confusion all around, there is no official training except awful training videos that have nothing to do with real life situations. For instance they tell you a whole list of things to say to a high school principal, who has no clue what you are even asking. Part time doesn't mean part time (6 hours a week is what is advertised). You have to spend countless hours/days searching for potential host families,...

    Advice to Management

Give bonuses, but how about paying the people left behind to pick after you paid the initial coordinator, who runs off with the money or if a student has to be placed elsewhere with a new coordinator? How about paying people who have to travel over 60 miles for gas?

I worked at COUNCIL FOR EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL USA

    Pros

As a Community Coordinator your pay is commission based. It really is what you make of it. They offer nice bonuses and a cool trip you can qualify for every year if you reach certain goals

    Cons

Depending on your students and host families, the pay can not be worth it. Sometimes you might have to relocate a student, meet them multiple times during one month because they are having issues, etc

I have been working at COUNCIL FOR EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL USA part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I love the ability to work from home and the training opportunities provided by our organization. If a person is a self-starter and can work independently, one can set their own goals and therefore decide what their earnings will be based on those goals. I have been full-time with benefits in the past (for about 5 years), then moved to part-time about three years ago. There is great flexibility in work hours and...

    Cons

Your earnings are based on your own goals and ambitions, and those of us who work remotely do not see the main office staff or our direct supervision more than a couple of times a year. Those times we do meet are great bonding experiences, and we are in contact weekly by phone and email.

    Advice to Management

Please continue to provide the great opportunities we have for travel and for training.
