I worked at CRH (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The hours was perfect the staff and employees were very help and respectful, everyone knew how to be at team player when work got backed up due to machines breaking down. The work was smooth nothing to strenuous.

    Cons

There wasnt any. I loved my job i didnt have anything to complain about. My employer was a very wise worker that told all of us to work smart not hard. I think thats why i never complained.

I have been working at CRH full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most divisions have a good work life balance most of the time. "Entrepreneurial" culture give most businesses flexibility in decisions

    Cons

    - All divisions of the organization function very autonomous leading to wildly different business cultures, brand names, processes, policies and communications tools. This can cause significant confusion to both employees internally and customers externally. Many divisions are on different emails and telephone networks, leading to regular situations where customers calling one division and needing to talk to another division where the best the employees can do for the customer is to give them the external 1-800 number of the other division.
    - Acquired companies frequently keep their original names leading to many employees completely unaware they work for CRH and oblivious that locations of other company divisions are operating in the same city.
    - Career advancement is almost entirely dependant on finding a senior leader to guide you through the convoluted organization and get you to be part of the "in" group and highly subject to change with senior leadership changes. I am actually considered part of this group and even from the inside it as deeply troubling.
    - Rapid career advancement available to those willing to rapidly and regularly willing to relocate but little to no support or guidance is given for employees taking on challenging roles and if there are any mistakes or perceived failures employees are either let go or demoted and given a long standing "low potential" assessment.
    - Performance management is really only focused on admin and manager level positions with the concept of the "talent pipeline" being focused on only senior leadership. Performance of front line employees is highly variable by division but mostly non-existent except for a few specific business sub-divisions.

    Advice to Management

The senior leadership of the organization makes generic statements about developing people which are underwhelming in action, especially when compared to other big companies. Most of the development "programs" are just a handful of training classes with no actual planned development over time for the individuals unless their local managers support development but will frequently stop when managers change. Don't talk about having the right people when training and development are almost always the first thing cut if there are short term sales or profit short falls.

I worked at CRH full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you know your way around, lots of possibilities to hop over from one group company to another. Because of financial focus a good place to be at after a few years work experience in financial auditing.

    Cons

Typical financial holding, high emphasis on results, and blame culture if results are not as projected. Lots of focus on people management, but doesn't work out due to financially driven culture.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be more than just a group of companies, then get clear what CRH stands for; transform yourself from a financially driven to a mission driven organization.

I have been working at CRH full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

High performing business, with interesting developments all the time. Careful with money, but not short of it - if you need resources you can get it. Family-oriented culture, with approachable management (most of the time).

    Cons

It's a traditional industry, and quite careful and conservative. Poor diversity, and doing little to change it.

    Cons

Compamy is reallh cheap when it comes to compensation. They are below average wages cpmpared to similar companies. There is no ethic dibersity and fill with group think.
