I have been working at CRIS (More than a year)

    Pros

I didn't find any pros to tell you guys because CRIS is not able to give any feeling of a Software Firm. It is only good for on-roll employees. Better if you want to go 5 years back in context to technology and concepts. Thats it!

    Cons

    - Technology adoption is not good. So you will not find anything new to learn as per the current IT sector demands.
    - They have the latest advanced tools and technology but they are not able to use it wisely.
    - overall i will say they are only consuming the gov money and resources. There is the lack of technology management.
    - Join only(specially on off role) if you do not like to learn anything new.

    Advice to Management

    - I will not advice to the management, but i will advice to the Ministry to appoint only technical person on the top level. At the end it is also an IT company.
    - Technical decisions should always be in the hand of technical person.

    Pros

As a part of the team , you will get the deadline very far away that you cant imagine for sure and you can easily finish your work on time.

    Cons

you get bored very easily doing the same thing again and again. Every employee here work as a developer, tester and debugger. So you have to deal with these three opportunities all together.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at CRIS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a Government organization, job security and time scale promotions are the only pros that can be counted. Promotions are tme-scaled so prepare to spend 5-7 years for a promotion, and pink slips are unheard of.

    Cons

    Where to start:
    1. There is a significant dearth of entry level hires. Threre was no intake over a period of 6-7 years prior to 2014, so a majority of the technical staff are in the Senior Software Engineer grade, while they are no junior grades.
    2. The organisation has moved from a "build" to a "buy" model, without fully evaluating the applicability of COTS to it's biggest clients ie Indian Railways. This leads to significant tension between the client ie Railways, the intermediary ie CRIS, and the SI ie the lowest bidder.
    3. There has been no investment in the resources in terms of training and soft-skills in-house. Any trainings that occur are project requirements and of inconsistent quality.
    4. Most of the staff is engaged in Contract and/or Vendor Management, rather than focussing on deliverables.
    5. Since CRIS has adopted a project funded model, the financial health of the project leads to project resources struggling from one financial crisis to the next.

    Advice to Management

CRIS can do a lot better, by focussing on it's services as products. Treat the projects as product development, with the discipline and process required.

As an autonomous society, create your own rule book for promotions and processes.
Invest in the resources based on output, not duration of service.
