I have been working at CRST Logistics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Understanding managers when in he right department, opportunities to grow basic knowledge of industry and tools needed for most jobs.

    Cons

Seem very gender dependent when it comes to advancement, difficult to earn higher wages but always plenty of work to do...more than one person should be responsible for some days

I worked at CRST Logistics full-time

    Pros

A couple of decent people to work with.

    Cons

Terrible management on all levels. Communication is almost non existent, and all of logistics is very poorly structured. Cursing across the room is a common occurrence, and most of the problem employees are the ones that have been there for 5+ years. Co-workers that overshare, rumors, lies, smoke & mirrors, no opportunity for advancement, and a general lack of industry knowledge spread through the entire staff definitely make this place one to avoid.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to treat your employees and help them grow, rather than worrying about how many extra zeroes you can get in your paycheck.

I have been working at CRST Logistics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A really fun place to work, very fast paced and decent enough people

    Cons

Just had a massive amount of layoffs with more expected later in the year. All new business is funneled through the Cedar Rapids terminal which starved out the smaller branches ( hence why they have all either been shut down or gutted.

The levels of management is a joke. It's a pretty small company yet there was 3 managers for a office of 10 people, and they are never on the same page. Communication is almost nonexistent most days which is hard to believe considering everybody is one 200 sq ft room.

    Advice to Management

When you are planning on laying people off, dont try to hide it til the last minute and blind side your employees. Considering the "severance" package was one of the worst that I've ever heard of, a bit more notice would have been nice. Instead you give your employees whom you have preached a family atmosphere to for years a half day notice and a weeks worth of pay. Mighty fine way of showing thanks to people.

    Pros

Great Atmosphere. Love the managers. Very team oriented. Would work there a long time

    Cons

Pay could be higher. Pay a little below the average salary.

    Advice to Management

Advice goes to Corporate Headquarters. Need to take more risks in investments and view the employee as an asset.

    Pros

Working with like minded team mates to reach a goal together.

    Cons

poor communication with all levels of management, favortism, expected to do work load of 2 people for as little pay as possible.

    Advice to Management

Keep communication consistent and not contradictory. Recognition and advancement to the employees that put in the time and effort to succeed and leave out the politics

I have been working at CRST Logistics full-time

    Pros

Financially secure company in a industry due for growth.

    Cons

Very vertically structured company with poor middle management.
Upper management seems to have a grasp on making smart decisions but are tied to long-term major bonus contracts that cloud judgement.
Middle management is a group of unqualified individuals that are poor leaders, and under-informed puppets.
Micro-management is a major issue leaving employees uncomfortable and disgruntled.
Base compensation for lower level employees is mediocre to poor with bonus structures that are laughable.
The technology is awful. Any attempts for upgrading have been nothing more then band aids that provide no real solutions. They are in they process of "upgrading", to a new TMS system that is a decade old, outdated and already being replaced by more forward thinking, tech-savvy competitors currently using it.
"CRST Logistics" is a small sector of the company and appears to be nothing but an old toy that isn't given much attention anymore.

    Advice to Management

Start being proactive. You are leaders in a fast paced industry and do nothing but stand by and make reactive decisions The competition continues to make improvements and you do nothing by stand by and enjoy your unearned titles. Eliminate the ridiculous levels of management. Empower your young, lower level workforce, let them make decisions, keep them informed, and let them be the professionals you hired them to be.

    Pros

Tons of coaching; enough work to keep you busy on a day to day basis; management that wants to try to make employees happy with employment

    Cons

No career advancement opportunities unless you are willing to wait an excessive amount of time; asking for a raise/deserving a raise is useless unless you are okay with waiting months for it to be discussed

    Pros

The only reason to work as a company driver at CRST is if you just graduated Truck Driving school and want to team drive to learn with support from your co-driver the in's and out's of OTR driving.

    Cons

The pay is .22 cents a mile as a brand new driver. Pay increases are too low. You never start hometime ONTIME! Daytime and Nightime Dispatch DONT communicate. You have to fight management to get repair work done. All toll, and scale cost you pay for up front our of your pocket then they reinburse you on your load pay after delivery. The route suggestion they want you to follow will enveribly put you on a US Hwy through cow towns, and sometimes dangerouse routes barely wide enough for a big rig. You almost always have to route yourself a safer route.
The lease purchase program is poor. You can purchase a 3yr old truck with over 500k miles for the higher retail price of $59K when it should be wholesale price of $45K tops. You cant choose the truck you want to buy, they tell you the truck your going to buy. You pay .12 cpm for maintenance fee and the money doesn't go into escrow, you dont get it back wether you use it or not. They split the load pay 70/30, but charge you for everything. You shouldn't dare charge fuel on ComData Fuel card for any load. They take the payback out of that settlement, but if you've run another load or two before that settlement is made..the fuel charges for all loads come out of that initial load settlement and do not wait to come out of each load settlements as they are made. This will keep you running in the red! As a lease purchase you must have your own cash to purchase your fuel with, saves you .06 cents a gallon and you wont have to worry about multiple load fuel charges comming out of one load settlement.
98% of CRST equiptment is poor. The trailers are in poor condition, and the dolly legs are rusty, Dolly arm and gears are stripped, the pull bar to slide the tandems are rusty and often you have to rock the truck back and forth while your co-driver pulls hard on the bar to get the pins to release, Most of the time the trailer registration is missing. 99% of the time when you hook to one of their trailers you get an immediate msg that the trailer has been flagged by DOT for tire, break issues! You can spend all of your time taking trailers for repairs and never make any money, or you have to just ignore the warning and hope for the best!
Anyone to be a lead driver regardless, and they wont fire you if your out of control. There is no prestige in being a lead driver at CRST. Its NOT a position earned or offered through recognition of excellence! The lead drivers are mostly lease purchase drivers who need a student onboard to roll hard miles. They have afew company drivers who are lead drivers, but for another .06cpm pay hike, who wouldn't go for more money when your only making .31cpm?
Truthfully there are far better companies to consider working for before you think about CRST. But if you cant get hired on anywhere else due to having something on your record..then CRST will take you on as a driver. This company is the LAST CHANCE SAM company for those of you who need one!

    Advice to Management

CRST management should have a suggestion box, and really listen to what the drivers have to say. The drivers are out there on the road, rolling the miles, and have to deal with all of the idiocies of dispatch, routing, maintenance, and poor equipment!
