I have been working at CSAA Insurance Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people, strong profitable company. Great insurance policy, stands behind their members. Claims are paid fairly.

    Cons

Executives sit in Walnut Creek and do not understand their employees...heads are in the clouds. They say they are pro employee but the local leadership is supportive.

    Advice to Management

Get a better IT department to move conversion quickly. IT costs are draining the company and providing headaches for the users.

    Pros

Excellent case file management, personal and corporate experience

    Cons

The salary made it fiscally unsound to stay. Putting two small children in day care in San Francisco would have cost more than my salary.

    Advice to Management

Keep high functioning adjusters exempt employees. Make quality employees want to stay

    Pros

Ranks as one of the best places I've ever had the privilege to work. Supportive supervisor. Technical

    Cons

A few of the long term employees seemed burned out but they also didn't seem to have any motivation to change their attitudes or seek a more challenging position.

    Advice to Management

Restructuring the organization too frequently. New ideas take time to show results. Rarely, if ever, resulted in a restructure of management - just those that were dealing with the public.

    Pros

CSAA has a legacy brand that other companies would kill for. They also have billions of assets to cushion their mistakes.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the leadership keeps playing "spin the bottle" with their strategies and nobody has the spine to make tough decisions. They blew half a billion dollars on a new system that still isn't working and the only thing saving them is they don't fall under any public disclosure requirements.

    Advice to Management

Resign. You're covering the high cost of your mistakes by grinding your people and driving them away.

    Pros

Good people culture, open to all life styles

    Cons

Constantly changing priorities, never sticking to your guns and getting things done. Rearranging the deck chairs to avoid responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Commit to the important projects and see them through. Stop hiding the incompetence of top management by re-orgs - the org structure is not the problem.

I worked at CSAA Insurance Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some genuinely nice people in the organization who believe in the mission of the company and are trying to help the customers. In fact, the people in the call centers and the offices are the best part of the company.

    Cons

The executives and management. Many people here haven't really worked anywhere else and it gives them zero credibility when they talk about the industry or best practices. Also, it's stuck in this weird time warp with it feeling like it's the 1980s. It's like working with your nice elderly aunt and uncle. People come here and either leave right away when the sniff the old people smell or they stay. And stay. And stay.

    Advice to Management

Get some credibility and some real leadership from outside your own industry. The people that get promoted are the ones who are kissing up to the right people at the right time, not the smartest or the people with most integrity.

I worked at CSAA Insurance Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of dept heads and managers trying to protect their kingdom because of all the products and channels. It was a great opportunity to learn each area and transform fragmented groups and ideas into a centralized customer centric organization.

    Cons

Turf wars - however, it was an opportunity to sway and change opinions with intelligent and thoughtful business cases.

    Advice to Management

Good overall management - remember to listen to your customers.

I worked at CSAA Insurance Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good employees still work there. Compensation team is close knit team which successfully administered for over 800 reps utilizing a single system (Callidus).

    Cons

Business Model is based on reactive (not proactive) decision making. Odd decision to hire a Payroll Manager as the Sales Compensation Manager (Ali Ansari). Company offered little in terms of employee benefits (free AAA membership & 10% insurance).

    Advice to Management

You should have been more discerning when it came to hiring key people to key roles. Ali's impact on the effectiveness and morale of the Sales Compensation team was significant. Internal customers lost all credibility in Sales Compensation due to his poor management.
