I worked at CSX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is very good. The system is workable so that if you and a union buddy cooperate you can manage to get specific days off.

    Cons

You have no social life. Sometimes you don't even have a home life. Extremely combative environment between union and management. The entire system is designed to get their employees in trouble. They do whatever they want and do not care about their employees at all. Management has no clue how to run a railroad. They openly acknowledge that they're ignoring what the customers want so they can fudge their numbers and try to appease the stock owners.

    Advice to Management

Provide the customer the services they want (Deliver cars when you say you're going to deliver cars). Hire train masters from your pool of engineers and conductors. Give train masters and road foremen the opportunity to coach and mentor rather than just discipline.

    Pros

Pay and retirement package are top in the industry.

    Cons

Not knowing if you'll have a job tomorrow.

I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good wages, great retirement, good benefits, union protected, diverse job choices (bid and award system), decent amounts of overtime, if wanted.

    Cons

Health cost sharing, young management (know it alls), recent workforce downsizing, constant outdoor work, too many levels of management, can be labor intensive at times.

    Advice to Management

Work the craft instead of just coming out of college.

I have been working at CSX full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Compensation and benefits.. railroad retirement is second to none. This section has a minimum of twenty words.. and I don't have much else to say that's positive.. unless you really like trains, rain, and snow.

    Cons

Zero quality of life. The schedule allows for no planning of social functions, or even doctors appointments. With a new attendance policy enacted (3/15), you are penalized for sick days.. even with valid documentation from your physician.

I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits for train and engine service

    Cons

Supervisors in the field often have little to no experience in railroad operations. This creates a severe problem in convincing labor that the corporation is actually concerned in improving any process.

    Advice to Management

Try to speak directly to workers in the field rather that having information filtered by low level managers who's sole concern is preserving their own jobs.

    Pros

    Great people to work with.

    Cons

No work/life balance for managers. If you don't write up enough T&E employees you are putting your job on the line. You only get promoted if you will move at the drop of a hat AND are in a certain click.

Biggest Con of all: Cindy Sanborn, Cindy Sanborn, Cindy Sanborn

    Advice to Management

Get a Chief Transportation officer that can relate to their employees.

I have been working at CSX full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You are you own boss. You go out at the beginning of the day, and when you finish the work you can go home.

    Cons

CSX requires a lot of you. It is a lifestyle and a career. Also in the beginning of your career you can and probably will be furloughed quite a bit
