I worked at CSX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent Training and excellent career opportunities for employees.

    Cons

The number of hours they expect management employees to work. The rail safety rules limit the number of hours contract employees can work. But managers are expected to work in excess of 70 hours per week.90

    Advice to Management

A better work home life balance. Senior management does not respect family time of their managers.

    Pros

    Good Pay and excellent benefits

    Cons

    Constant turnover and job abolishments
    very political environment

    Advice to Management

Most likely will be either sold or merged with another RR in 3-4 years. More job cuts to come.
its a good living if you make it past all the re-organizations and don't mind a boatload of work.

I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, pension, 401k. Many great co-workers overall. New CEO has an opportunity to make it better overall.

    Cons

You pay a lot for your pension. 401k not matching. New CEO has been known for cutting many jobs. Shift work. Get used to being a zombie.

    Advice to Management

Hiring from within i.e. craft workers to management, can do wonders of the company. Hiring a person straight from college with no real life experience to manage a bunch of people who have worked here for many years can decrease morale quickly. Also, when a mid-level manager asks for an expert opinion, decides not to take the advice, and creates a multi-million dollar catastrophe they should be held accountable. I've seen it happen several times in my short time.

I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Working with trains is interesting/challenging

    Cons

As an IT employee it felt as though I was working in New Delhi every day.

Back in 2009 CSX started aggressively bringing in Indian IT contractors, it got to the point where the were 5 Indians for each American. Many of them were on staff long enough for their green cards to get processed at which point they promptly became CSX employees.

The Indians they brought in didn't fulfill the spirit of the H1B program as they certainly did not possess unique and hard to find skills. In fact, many American developers left CSX and were replaced by Indians. They did work cheaper though!!

    Advice to Management

Stop breaking the H1B rules and do right by the American people; via land grants and policy assistance railroads were made possible, without Americans you would not exist.

Hire a CEO that doesn't lug around an oxygen tank (litterally) and isn't stuck in great-depression era management practices, otherwise you'll find yourself on the receiving end of employment lawsuits.

You cannot expect employees to work 50-60 hours/week without commensurate compensation.

I have been working at CSX full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great long term benefits.
    Extra week vacation added.
    You can also purchase leave
Good health benefits and awesome gym and personal trainer facility
Good communication of strategy by leadership

    Cons

    Lacks technology updation
Even though they have long term benefits, they don't want to have employees staying longer. Lot of layoffs and pressure and one cant work with peace

    Advice to Management

Improving operating ratio can be achieved through streamlining processes and improving price
They need a proper pricing infrastructure in place

I worked at CSX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, excellent training, great benefits.

    Cons

Little or no family life, no upward mobility, glass ceiling for minorities( look at UPPER management), Very stressful( ever heard of "run-off insurance"?). Benefits come thru Union/ you must belong to a Union. Constant testing and evaluation. Somewhat dangerous, easy to get killed or dismembered on the ground as a conductor. Very adversarial relation with management who must "test" and have a percentage of "failures" resulting in punishment (usually time off without pay).

    Advice to Management

Treat people fairly, don't unilaterally renege on contracts and promises made to achieve wage reductions. If you were fair and didn't employ legions of attorneys to nitpick long standing agreements by reinterpreting "shall, may, will, would" to break your agreements, you would see the Unions depart as unnecessary. That, and a tendency to spend vast amounts of your stockholder's money on executive compensation and perks, plus golden parachutes! An Aviation section! Really.

    Pros

Great business with a wide moat and talented people.

    Cons

Company going through a very hard time as new CEO is focused on temporary share price at the expense of headcount, assets, culture and all the things that sustain a company beyond near term results.

    Advice to Management

Get back to managing a sustainable railroad that serves all stakeholders for the long term.

    Pros

Pay and benefits, the guys and the help they provide. Opportunities to do many types of jobs. Union. Neat places to go.

    Cons

Never home and getting worse. Union is about worthless goes along with whatever the company wants. Plenty of backroom deals.

    Advice to Management

    Back to caring for employees
