Just leave it alone smoke and mirrors
Sep 17, 2020 - Freight ConductorRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good money but want get to get the chance to get to the decent salary with the constant cuts
Cons
No job security hire you just to furlough you corporate take over typical want more for less just to cut jobs and push people out. Which trickles down to the seniority system where you work the extra board base on openings due to vacations and call outs. Employees getting run down and effects the next person and management will write you up. Simply put company going through changes to trim cost and continue to go through changes.

Pros
They are a contributor to railroad retirement but beyond that have nothing for them personally. If you are able to make the same money in another career then do so and invest yourself in you own retirement.
Cons
Retaliatory and vindictive toward labor. The newest company wide trend is the ramping up of their aggression toward the transportation crews and a new willingness to forsake the customer in order to lower wage commitments and make life more uncomfortable for the work force. If you are greedy at any cost it may be for you but as a man of strong moral values I am looking for an exit strategy. Even at 96K/yr I can not tolerate being abused like this.

Pros
Company pay, benefits, and bonus potential are greater than most Fortune 250 companies.
Cons
The current corporate culture is toxic as the company is continuing to look to reduce headcount in anyway possible. This has created a stiff culture of political posturing and deceit. In addition to the cultural issues, there is little to no work/life balance. There is a cost to the high salary and good benefits. Many employees complain that they don't get to spend the extra money they are earning because they are 'on-duty' 24/7.

Pros
Many opportunities to get trips and make money if you are okay with working conditions. Room to grow professionally if you are willing to relocate.
Cons
While many other jobs within CSX will have structured hours and time off. Freight conductor is not one of them. DO NOT expect to know when you will have time off. When it comes, expect using time to get much needed rest. Time between trips is spent resting catching up from last trip and getting ready for next. After mandatory 10 hour rest, wait for next call. Call could come immediately or a day later. Makes it very hard to plan day/sleep patterns to arrive for next trip bright eyed and bushy tailed. Safety stressed but many find it confusing when standards are broken by management to get job done but then enforced when convenient. Very poor Union vs Management environment.

Absurd Management Style
Oct 23, 2009 - Locomotive Engineer and Conductor in Indianapolis, INRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good pay and benefits. Nice pension. The railroad is now a stable industry for the first time in decades. Also, lots of improvement to the track structure this year - better late than never!
Cons
It takes years to acquire enough seniority to hold a regular job. But worst of all, labor-management relations are awful. CSXT was certainly too lenient in previous generations, but it is now overly strict, to the point of sheer lunacy. Managers are required to find fault and put employees into formal investigations over the smallest things, or they can forget about being promoted. I can't imagine how much money is lost because management is sucking the initiative out of good workers. The management training program turns bright young men into scared, arrogant fools. Lastly, positions are cut and rationalized before the technology to do so is perfected, often resulting in collisions, damage and injuries.

Not the Company It Once Was
Aug 23, 2021 - Operations SupervisorRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I enjoyed to mental aspect of the work
Cons
There are absurd rules that those in management must follow or they are bullied into quitting, even if those rules aren't entirely ethical. this company was a joy to work for when I originally was hired on. However, when the precision railroading contingent came into power, things changed. It became more about money being earned for absent shareholders than customer service and employee safety. They are running this company into the ground.
