I worked at CTA Architects Engineers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of good software and programs. Good IT department overall. Good location.

    Cons

Not enough engineering, just drafting. Guys working there 25 years sit down all day and draft, just like new guys. Can't think of anything more boring and uninspiring. New hires probably take a two credit course in CAD. That two credit course is the only course needed for the job.

    Advice to Management

Drafters should draft, and engineers should engineer. Get engineers up to speed on basics of drafting programs (REVIT), but dedicate the training, don't just let them learn on their own, which is inefficient - a waste of time and money for everyone.

    Pros

CTA has a very laid back and entrepenaurial style. They are very focused on the client and giving them the best value for their money. CTA is a great place for young architects and engineers to start out. Many people start here and stay here throughout their careers. CTA is overall a great place to work especially for Arch. and Eng. professionals. CTA has an excellent benefits package along with 401k retirment plan that matches up to 6%. CTA works on a variety of projects from 9 vertical market sectors. CTA has been in business since 1938 and has an outstanding reputation and many repeat clients. We did win top ten best A/E firms to work for in a nationwide survey.

    Cons

Compensation. Being a company headquartered in Montana has its downfalls, we have a low cost of living and low wage scale. CTA has trouble recruiting top talent from large markets, even though we are a fairly large company, largely because of compensation. CTA is very entrepenaurial, which is good and bad. Sometimes people that need to be mentored and trained are not given enough attention. CTA seems to have a learn how to do it yourself attitude. Which is good to a a certain extent, but can lead to employees feeling like they are on an island by themselves. CTA should implement changes in compensation and mentorship.

    Advice to Management

CTA has a pretty estute and experienced management team. They have grown and developed the company more than any other group of managers. However, I would say more involvement with lower level staff, as far as mentorship, presentations etc. would be the main improvement that I think they could make.

    Pros

CTA has a very nice work space in Boise and an enjoyable company culture. There are training sessions over lunch and social events after work.

    Cons

The open office structure is loud and can be distracting. Some management are difficult to work with and mobility in the company is limited.

    Advice to Management

Encourage diversification more. People often work in one service sector or field and having teams of people who all have experience across the spectrum of their field may be more engaging for employees and more effective for design.

I worked at CTA Architects Engineers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible hours. Nice coworkers. The new president, Scott Wilson, is great and making big strides to move company forward

    Cons

Terrible pay and benefits. Very poor project management and many unrealistic timelines, resulting in "over promise under deliver" situations.

    Advice to Management

Put people in positions that are right for the job, not people that have been there the longest

I worked at CTA Architects Engineers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

One of the biggest upsides was a flexible schedule approach which really helped with the work-life balance. There is also a fair amount of autonomy, but one must be a self-starter.

    Cons

The design aesthetic is ok, depending on the office. The heavy client focus at times makes you as an architect feel more like a hired draftsman than a designer to add value. The compensation is a little bit on the lower end of the average.
