I have been working at Cabela's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunity to socialize with a customer base that loves the outdoors.
Chance to learn different marketing stratagies of the outdoor world
Great place to work with people who know in depth information about their passion in the outdoors
Training opportunities are there when you take the initiative to bring them up. They will not bring it up on their own
    Discounts are amazing.

    Cons

    Scheduling is not as flexible.
Some managers lack knowledge of the departments they are assigned to as well as motivating their staff.

    Advice to Management

Training, training, training. This is the biggest failure
Understanding your area market needs attention. Essential to increase product availability on a more consistant basis.

    Pros

Great family culture. Great discounts and a great work life balance

    Cons

All the talk about the Bass pro/Cabelas merger and not knowing what is going on.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be true to Cabelas culture and values.

    I worked at Cabela's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The retail store smells fantastic. Always smell like roasted pecans or something. Also even at the busiest time of the year it is still very stocked and easy to help customers find what then need.

    Cons

If you are temporary like I was no one wants to teach you how to do something because they figure well he will just be gone in a few weeks and all I taught him will be for nothing. So it can be difficult figuring out their confusing computer system's database and it's very old interface.

    Advice to Management

By now having a clean and modern interface for the item lookup should be a priority because the old database is clunky and hard to use.

    Pros

Decent discounts, decent management, friendly staff.

    Cons

moderate pay long hours a lot of standing and walking no sitting, hours vary greatly you might work till 10 one night and open at 7 the next morning. You rarely get two days off in a row.

    Pros

Fun place to work, good discount

    Cons

A lot of direction from a lot of different people

    Advice to Management

Focus on the culture that got you where you are. You can not simply move forward just because you think you should as a business, without communicating exceptionally

    I worked at Cabela's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The HR staff is always doing something nice to show employee appreciation. Loyal customer base too.

    Cons

Never enough tools or equipment to do our jobs because management doesn't want to spend the money to fix or replace broken ones. Floor coverage is a joke and it's sad to watch customers throw down things they want to buy and leave because they can't find an outfitter to help them.

    Advice to Management

Educate your outfitters so they can help customers with their questions. Maybe cross train them in other areas so when there's 2 people to cover footwear, clothing, camping, camo, and fishing, they'll be able to help customers in providing solutions and suggestions vs saying I don't know that's not my department.

    I have been working at Cabela's part-time

    Pros

The employee discount is the only good thing about this company.

    Cons

Poor management, from top to bottom. You are just a number, not a real person.

    Pros

Fun working with the customers and coworkers
Enjoy the outdoor products hunting shooting
    very nice building and displays

    Cons

They don't seem to be able to maintain a stable work patter.
I get it's retail but they either have no help on the floor or hire to many people and then cut hours.
Over the time I have been there (5 yrs) many fringies and perks have been taken away.
Money considering the amount of knowledge you need is marginal.

    Advice to Management

Make a plan and stick to it for more than 60 days.
Stop the knee jerk reactions to minor crises.
    Take better care of floor

    Pros

worked with a bunch of great people. getting an employee discount was nice. the store carries merchandise that may be hard to find in other stores.

    Cons

having to work many weekends. because it's retail you didn't get time off for certain holidays. work load at times would be too much. also not a good balance between work and family time.

    Advice to Management

cut back on expectations. most employees work hard and more and more is expected from them.
