I worked at Cairn Energy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good place to build a career if you belong to the Technical teams. Great and sometimes the most expensive international trainings are on offer for Geotech teams.
For the rest, well they do organise some great parties!

    Cons

The list is too long but let me just give a glimpse of what is on offer. The work is purely clerical in nature (though most of HR does seem so to many!). Inputs and ideas are not appreciated as my boss always thought he knew the answer to every question. A big yes man, he wouldn't spare a thought before blaming his subordinates for his follies despite knowing that the subordinates were a bunch of MTs. Lot of immaturity demonstrated by the HR folks - a result of the pedigree most belonged to. As far as career opportunities are concerned, there aren't too many. Career growth is tenure driven but that's the case in most organisations. Learning opportunities as an HR is completely missing, both in terms of on-the-job as well as external trainings.

    Advice to Management

Rehire your HR team or enrol the current team into an HR course

    Pros

Till date there are excellent opportunities available for skill enhancements with on the job and inhouse and outside training opportunities for all technical employees.

    Cons

Pathetic work envoronment with no transparency and favourites securing all the promotions and better pay rise. Plagiarism rules and honest workers are never recognised.

    Advice to Management

Organisation is bleeding profusely, so look after honest workers otherwise organisation will be left with sycophants.

I worked at Cairn Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    CEO was very inclusive.
    Wins were celebrated together.
Engineers & field workers were given autonomy to make decisions even if they were wrong.
Largely a can do attitude without too much constraint to procedures as being sacrosanct

    Cons

Some of the less able corporate types promoted ahead of the can-do engineers
The culture was becoming more self important at senior management level with Indian success
Some of the top engineers both geophysical & drilling moved on
Not sure if the current CEO has the ability to follow the previous CEO

    Advice to Management

As the ex CEO would have said - You are only as good as your last game.
Cairn - your last game was Greenland. It was a 3-0 defeat.
Your last cup final was the Indian sale to Vedanta - it went to extra time, then extra extra time. Its not clear to the fans which side won but it might have been the referee in the shape of the Indian Government.
Make sure you value your engineers and try and retain the knowledge within the company
