I have been working at Cal State East Bay full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Benefits are great, work-life balance

    Cons

Virtually no chance for promotion. Upper management takes care of each other, little concern for staff. Low pay for the area.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to be more understanding of department salary requirements; they continue to pay below market rate for many employees, and turnover is high due to this.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Cal State East Bay (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is good, students are great to work with.

    Cons

CSUEB is a terrible place to work as a temporary faculty. Politics are exhausting and failure to correctly identify which side of various fences to be on is sure to make you miserable and unlikely to generate well-deserved re-appointment. Temporary faculty constantly complain about this place. Awful.

    Advice to Management

Scrutinize departmental-personnel decisions to far greater degrees.

I worked at Cal State East Bay full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and organizational mission. I had a highly competent manager for several years.

    Cons

The culture of individual units can change dramatically when leadership higher up changes. The leader at the time didn't understand or value our department's skill set, so he pushed out our manager and brought in some "yes" men, undermining what had been a productive work group.

    Advice to Management

Trust the professionals who have been hired for their experience and expertise, especially if it's in an area outside your specialization.
