I worked at CalAmp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good salary-mediocre benefits. Company does run lean so lots of responsibility and challenges to keep you engaged.

    Cons

Poor communication and vision from the top down. SR management does not have their finger on the pulse. 1 Step forward, 2 steps back. Consistently late to market with new products and services. Inability to properly service Enterprise level customers. Operating in a time of uncertainty with constant downsizing, reorg's and lay-offs.

    Advice to Management

CalAmp lives in a demand creation environment, yet they operate like they are in a demand fulfillment model. Without proper tracking and metrics, management is ill informed as to what is going on in the funnel. Over the past 24 months, the level of expertise that has either left, been laid of or is there but not motivated should be addressed. As a shareholder I am pulling for CalAmp however I think there are some serious growing pains looming on the horizon

    - Small budgets for some of the teams
    - Disjointed and poorly run offices

    Pros

Strong manufacturing product line. Well respected hardware manufacturer. Great Technical Sales Support Team.

    Cons

SaaS side of the business was not well funded/managed resulting in substandard products in the market.

    Advice to Management

Reinvest in the SaaS and PaaS product lines and streamline the sales organization.

I have been working at CalAmp full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are very good. For those who benefit from stock participation, that is a nice benefiit

    Cons

Lack of a clear focus. No communication from upper management to keep troops on the right path. No one actually seems to know what the path is. Products that generate large amounts of revenue are being left to die with no investment in them to keep them competitive. With Verizon buying up all the competing software companies in the AVL space, CalAmp is going to be less and less of a player, thanks to poor decisions by management. Off-shoring software development to India is only making the problem worse.

    Advice to Management

Communicate to your employees. Provide clear direction company wide and review it quarterly to make sure everyone gets the message. Invest in the products that can truly impact your bottom line.

I have been working at CalAmp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are still some good people left after the post acquisition culling. New HR VP is working on making it a better place to work by humanizing the company.

    Cons

Still has the hardware company mentality. Does not understand or appreciate the value and difficulty with software development. Remote senior management is unaware seems to be able to both micro manage and be uncommunicative. Strong inter-location rivalries exist with back stabbing and drama beyond what should be expected in a professional company. Little or no chance for career development or advancement -- nobody gets promoted or even recognized for excellent work. Message from management is "We suck, and it's all your fault."

    Advice to Management

Trust your people to know what they are doing. Don't rely on hearsay for gaining an impression of what employees are actually doing.

    I worked at CalAmp full-time

    Pros

Great group of employees. Everyone is hardworking and committed to their job

    Cons

Like many public companies, it is profit driven. Continues to ship more and more of the work overseas to increase margins. Little effort is put into growing the people.

    Advice to Management

Commit to the community you are a part of. Hundreds of jobs have been lost in an effort to achieve higher profits. Shed yourselves of your sweatshop mentality and grow something that matters.

I have been working at CalAmp full-time

    Pros

Business is on a sharp growth curve and has been consistently throughout a tough recession
Good people who are willing to take on more responsibilities can do so if they step up

    Cons

Management is primarily focused on stock value
Employee satisfaction is probably lowest on the list of priorities to management
    Quality control is seriously lacking
Lack of scalability - No real interest in process and optimization

    Advice to Management

Sooner or later, the 30, 40 percent growth curve will slow. Prepare for this by optimizing the business with better processes, top notch people, and quality control procedures. That way, your customers will be happier with solid products, employees will be more fulfilled, and your stock value won't tank like it did last time you mismanaged the business.
