      Pros

Calpers offers a good work life balance with good upward mobility opportunities. The campus is a nice place to work and the coworkers are awesome.

      Cons

Working for the state means a lot of beirocracy. Salaries are closely matched regardless of production level which could be considered a good or bad thing.

Great opportunity to work at the forefront of the investment industry while maintaining a balanced life

      Pros

Work-life balance is definitely not just lip service. At the same time, the opportunities to be at the forefront of the investment industry are plentiful. Solid leadership. Definitely more of an asset manager than a government entity.

      Cons

As a public pension, it is difficult for compensation to be competitive with peers on the private side. The reality that compensation comes in many forms other than your paycheck must be emphasized.

Think about before joining a government agency

      Business Outlook

      Pros

CA State agencies have great work/life balance, and great job security

      Cons

Lack of motivation among almost every employee, many are here just for the long term benefits of a pension. Bureaucracy runs wild here among managers and staff without a real clear vision except for at the executive level. Pay is below investment industry average. No real ambition among peers and the Investment Office is still pretty "siloed". If you want a challenge, go work in the private sector.
