I worked at Calera as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The company was engaging and interesting. A lot of really smart people worked there trying to solve some great challenging problems.

    Cons

The technology they were trying to develop was far from profitability. Although it was well funded at the time, the future was bleak. We felt like we working on really important projects, but it was impossible to stay very optimistic

    Advice to Management

It was easy to see the problem of running out of money eventually. It was a great place to work on any given day, but it was hard to see a long term future at the company. That made it difficult to stay focused long term.

    Pros

fast paced environment, technology oriented, Carbon dioxide related work, good employees, great location, potential for obtaining patents, opportunity to meet with investors. Some of the senior management were really good. Unfortunately, they left / forced to leave.

    Cons

promotions have no meaning here. Only the senior management seems to be getting promoted. Management is not willing to listen to criticism.

    Advice to Management

Promote employees (not only yourselves), be open to criticism, maintain an open culture - recognize that this is a start-up company. Will Roach was a very good CEO.

Good work/life balance as long as you meet your deliverables
    Good co-workers that helped out

    Cons

Company is going through growing stages so was constantly in flux. Never know when it will change.

I worked at Calera full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The initial vision managed to pull together amazingly skilled scientists, some of which are still there
Cool research, young team, closely stick together
Management has got a clear view on challenges and speaks to it openly

    Cons

Tough to motivate new hires on changed vision
Long-term cycle - so nothing close to completion
Raised a lot of capital, potential returns will be low if any for employees

    Advice to Management

    Close one commercial deal ASAP
