I have been working at Calgary Zoo part-time

    Pros

Very accommodating to students and able to provide flexible scheduling and opportunities for personal growth/advancement. Great people and an overall great environment. Employee perks are awesome!

    Cons

Outrageously busy periods, chronic understaffing issues, stressful situations involving customers.

    Advice to Management

Schedule according to how many people would manage a busy day effectively, not based on a bare minimum budget.

I worked at Calgary Zoo full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Beautiful environment
    Positive and helpful zookeepers
    Opportunities

    Cons

    Horrible, disorganized, bias management.
    Poor discount
    Badly trained employees
    Young new hires
    Terrible food
    Lazy, condescending workplace attitudes
    Unreasonable expectations

    Advice to Management

Replace all aspects of management, train staff better, tougher, more THOROUGH. Explain consequences of breaking code/rules that employees agree to upon being hired. Stricter hiring management. Dedicated, sympathetic managers with unbias morals. I felt as though the manager who was bias, hired bias supervisors, who gave shiftlead titles to even more bias employees. Long story short, anyone in a leadership role was bias. Be management's favourite hardworking fool, and rise through the ranks.

I worked at Calgary Zoo full-time

    Pros

Inspiring mission to ensure kids have an experience of natural world. So too, endangered species are researched and helped to reestablish populations. Community loves the zoo. The pandas are coming. One of Alberta's leading tourist attractions. Senior management can be visionary and innovative. Competitive salary/benefits.

    Cons

More bottom line than conservation (vision) driven. Runs risk of being a circus/menagerie than an organization focused on making a global impact. Senior leader has been there too long (more focused on "me' than "us".

    Advice to Management

Lead with conservation as highest priority, along with education. Develop solid relationships with those who express interest in the animals and who have the means/wealth to ensure that support is available to ensure that the mission efforts are successful.

I worked at Calgary Zoo full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    All the animals
    Benefits
    RSP program
Christmas Party, Staff BBQ, Family BBQ
We care about our employee gifts
    Extra training through HR
    Spring Pansy sale
    Most of the people
I would be very happy to work for the zoo for the rest of my life.

    Cons

At times not realistic to the real issues of the zoo. Many employees are overworked and under appreciated. Thank you goes a long ways. Other employees hardly work, make mistakes and it will go unnoticed.

    Advice to Management

The Calgary Zoo is a big place to work, a good place to work but middle management is left with to much freedom. When PEP's are done HR should be questioning employees to get opinions on how their bosses are supporting or not supporting them.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Fantastic work experience, free access to the zoo, first access to new information etc. Good opportunities to learn about the zoo and the different animals. 25% discount on the food and on the gift shop.

    Cons

Some of the staff are condescending, while there are many opportunities the majority of them are not paid and require extensive training and time to give. It makes it harder to have to motivation to take advantage of the opportunities.

    Pros

Good work experience for people without much or any work experience
    Good supervisors
    Nice people

    Cons

Extremely disorganized, one department has no idea what the other departments are doing
    Poor training
    Working in parking is awful!
Hours are limited when weather is bad, although this is not the fault of the Zoo, it does limit your potential income

    Advice to Management

Have an actual training program, don't just pick a randomn person to shadow
