I have been working at Calico Corners (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Creative job with great co-workers and discount is nice.

    Cons

Poorly managed with no direction and locked into outdated technology. The company makes it extreamly difficult to do your job. Lacks vision.

    Advice to Management

Update technology. Do away with in home program as it stands and allow design associates to service in home customers too.

I worked at Calico Corners part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent training program, beautiful quality products that make it easy to be enthusiastic about selling. Flexible scheduling made work/life balance easier. The other sales associates were really nice to work with and willing to share knowledge. I learned a lot about specifying window treatments, and about the inner workings of upholstered furniture.

    Cons

Low pay and impossible sales expectations. Some possessiveness over regular customers by seasoned sales staff. Misleading compensation info during hiring; it is impossible to earn the bonuses that were promised.

    Advice to Management

Calico seems to have lost it's way. With the current DIY craze, making fabrics only available to order forces Calico to compete with much more affordable sources online. Be honest about pay to keep your new hires from feeling cheated right from the start.

I worked at Calico Corners full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The structured training program allows you to become very proficient in understanding construction and estimating for window treatments, bedding, reupholstery, furniture, pillows. Take that information to your next job. Get the training and get out.

    Cons

The manager will have you out a selection of fabrics to create a vignette. If she doesn't like it, she will talk about it for days to anyone who will listen. The hourly pay is an insult to an educated designer. The monthly incentive (bonus) works out to be .0125% of your sales. But you must meet your your designated goal each month to get your incentive. Calico takes the Lions share. The work is very demanding and very detail oriented. On your feet all day. No down time. It is a never ending cycle of sell sell sell, without heartfelt appreciation, that rolls from one month to the next. Easy to get burned out. No room for advancement. Being an in home consultant puts you in a even worse position. Keep interviewing.

    Advice to Management

I will never work for a corporation after my experience here. The corporate mentality allows for a good Ole boy network, but with women who are short sighted, who bully, and are lazy. Manager often picks on and micro manages staff, treating adult women like we're naughty first graders. She will talk behind your back. The only thing you will learn from her is how NOT to treat people. When I needed support, i did not find it at the store level or the district level. Upper management is not interested in the sales associates. Just lunch. Most staff feel unappreciated. Hours will abruptly be cut when corporate decides they need to tighten their belt. No apologies. No extra incentives. No thank yous. Just a smaller paycheck at a small wage.

    Pros

The fabrics and the customers were lovely. Products are well made.

    Cons

The "goals" and "bonus" pressured atmosphere causes an unpleasant and territorial attitude in the work environment and among employees. It made me decide it wasn't worth my time to work there.

    Advice to Management

Make your goals store oriented, so that employees work cooperatively, and are kind to each other. It would go a long way for the company!

I have been working at Calico Corners full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The customers are awesome. As an in home, it's nice to go out and work in the customers home on a one on one basis.

    Cons

Back stabbing by co-workers gets old fast. Hard for part timers to meet quotas. Your quota is set by how many hours you work. The more you work the more you must sell.

    Advice to Management

Management should have some design experience or a really good understanding of the product we sell.

I worked at Calico Corners full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Generous employee discount and beautiful textiles. The early training is very beneficial and thorough, especially for those who don't have a interior design background.

    Cons

The company has not stayed current with technology. They demand that their design associates perform at a very minimum of 14 to 15 times your hourly wage. If you fail to meet the grossly exaggerated sales goals, you are written up and warned that you may be at risk of being terminated. At $12.00 an hour, it is abusive. The design associates job (many of which are design educated) requires an extreme attention to detail, extensive knowledge of window treatments along with hardware knowledge and an ability to work creatively. The company has no marketing or advertising program in place to bring in the type of "customer" that can afford Calico's "custom product and services".

    Advice to Management

All design associates should be In-Home Design Consultants. Pay your employees a decent life's wage. Understand your market (not every demographic is like Arlington, VA) and set realistic goals. Get on top of your technology (e.g., design software on iPads so customers can better visualize what is being designed for them). Get out of the re-upholstery business. You are retail (the middleman) and your prices are over-the-top. Stop taking advantage of customers by overselling and over quoting yardage "required" for a "project". Step up your advertising and marketing.

I worked at Calico Corners part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A creative atmosphere, extensive and thorough training program, generous employee discount program.

    Cons

Low salaries/pay, management that is immune to the needs of their employees, an unrealistically high incentive program

    Advice to Management

Calico could take a lesson from the Market Basket chain in MA. If you want to have the benefits of capitalism you have to absorb the costs. $12.00 per hour for the level of expertise that is required to do this job effectively is an embarrassment.

    Pros

Public reputation is great, repeat business opportunities.

    Cons

Owners do not acknowledge or compensate employees with a design education and 20+ years trade experience! They dismiss the value for the skills one needs to accurately preform soup to nuts soft treatment design services. Only willing to pay $8.00 hour!!!!! Insulting. Also, the commissioned floor is a free for all frenzy.

    Advice to Management

Respect the knowledge you demand of your employees. Compensate fairly and validate the abundance of skills needed by positively recognizing ones individual contribution under the company's name. Support, highlight and promote the individual with pride.
