I worked at California Academy of Sciences (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employees are dedicated, hard-working, and proud of the CAS' mission. There's diversity and things are done right.

    Cons

Like the nature of many non-profits, there's little room for growth. You have to wait until your performance review for salary increases. It's not like a start-up where you can take on many hats. You're pretty much supposed to do what your job description says.

I worked at California Academy of Sciences part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really fun/cool place to work! You can never get tired of seeing all the animals and exhibits. Everyone in Guest Experience is outgoing and fun to work with, it's like a little family. You get access to all of the museum. 25% off in the gift shops.

    Cons

Tasks are monotonous and boring. You have to stand a whole lot! It's hard on your feet, legs, and even back. Sometimes you're stuck in one position for well over an hour, and you're by yourself it's very boring. Also the management changed schedule of the museum, so be prepared to work 365 days a year! There's so many staff members that the higher-ups don't even know who you are. I felt like my manager didn't even know my name unless I had a name tag on.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your workers a little bit more. Give them more recognition, they work really hard..

I worked at California Academy of Sciences full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Best scientists and the mission at the Academy is amazing. Scientists are strongly devoted to their work and research. Great employee programs and Academy 101. Great to be part of a long-standing institution. Very humble CEO.

    Cons

Non-profit environment can be tough. Small staff = more work = overworked = drained and burnt out. Some teams have very bad managers, so I do recommend but it depends on which team you are joining.

    Advice to Management

Provide 360 reviews in order to get better feedback on management.

I have been working at California Academy of Sciences part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are great! The job is easy and the facility is world renowned. It's such a cool place to work at considering it's one of San Francisco's top tourist attractions and there is some ground breaking research being done at the Academy.

    Cons

The ceilings are very low- so if you're trying to move up, there is only so much that you can do in this department. The job can also get very repetitive because it is simple once you learn how to do it.

  9. "great space, wide discrepancy in management practices"
