I have been working at California Department of Managed Health Care full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Employees of this organization particiapte in regulatory activities that ensure health care consumers receive the "Right Care at the Right Time". This is meaningful work that produces job satisfaction.

    Cons

Significant health care mandate being implemented by a relatively small (about 300 staff) department.

    Advice to Management

Continue to recognize staff achievements and provide ongoing tiemly health care industry and regulatory information and education.

I worked at California Department of Managed Health Care full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Health, Dental, Vision and Retirement benefits. The job site is located near Cesar Chavez Park. There are plenty of restaurants, activities to walk to during business hours. During May- October there is a Farmers Market every Wednesday.

    Cons

The Office of Plan Monitoring is overrun with egotistical, incompetent directors, managers and supervisors. It is a boys club. If you are male regardless of how bad the quality of work you do you WILL get promoted. They know who is getting promoted before people apply for positions. Management makes it tough for you to move around the organization or even to other State positions. In order to get promoted you are expected to take your work home with you to keep up with the workload.

    Advice to Management

Quit micromanaging and acknowledge good staff before they leave. Don't treat the hard working people like they are nothing.

I have been working at California Department of Managed Health Care full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Not working at the downtown location (free parking). Some decent coworkers.

    Cons

Supervisors/managers need to be trained on more effective management skills. The department is young and it shows in the current manager's lack of skills. Too many frequent unnecessary changes. Supervisors/managers harbor a clique type of environment where "tattling" is encouraged.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the office culture and certain employees that contribute to negativity in the workplace. It is going down hill quickly.

I have been working at California Department of Managed Health Care full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

People are knowledge and seem to be very well educated. Workload can be heavy but is manageable for the most part.

    Cons

Parking rates to work downtown are extremely high. Also, the organization is still very much in its infancy and it shows.

    Advice to Management

Develop younger talent and retain them by offering opportunities to grow through training and professional development. Also, think outside of the box for solutions.

I worked at California Department of Managed Health Care part-time for more than a year

    Pros

DMHC's call center allows the student workers to have flexible schedules that work around their college courses. Unfortunately, as of late, CA no longer is allowed to have state workers. It is rumored that many state departments are still hiring students, but as seasonal employees, so they can still have a flexible school/work schedule. Many of the staff at DMHC are really nice and enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

As is the nature with any call center, some of the consumers calling in can be brutal, especially when you're dealing with sensitive issues (like people's health care concerns and complaints). Some people will be really rude and you have to have thick skin and not let it get to you. Also, it is hard to get into an official state job sometimes because of the ridiculous "qualifications" and tests they want to you meet.

    Advice to Management

Screen calls of workers more often and weed out the slackers and people will terrible customer service skills. In this economy, you don't have to put up with poor workers!

I have been working at California Department of Managed Health Care full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The DMHC is on the cutting edge of health care reform, for the State of California and nationally. This gives every employee a chance to make a difference. New ideas are welcome and quickly acted on.

    Cons

As a state agency changing "corporate" culture can be painfully slow. Fortunately, there are not many classic "state employee" at the DMHC.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the management of the Department and you will get more from the Department.
