I worked at California State Auditor full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

I valued the professionalism of this workplace and the dedication that people have towards making government work better, This workplace is small enough to feel like a community but large enough to offer a diversity of assignments as well as great opportunities to learn new skills and advance your career. Great benefits and vacation as well.

    Cons

Some assignments required lots of overtime and travel.

I have been working at California State Auditor full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

-Interesting work making an impact on the State of California -It's great working with so many smart people -Opportunities to travel throughout the state

    Cons

-Work/Life balance can be better -Pay is low compared to similar positions -Sometimes there is not enough advanced notice for travel

    Advice to Management

There is too much focus on new hires and not enough attention is paid to auditors who have been with the office for some time.

I have been working at California State Auditor full-time

    Pros

The California State Auditor's Office is a great place to start your career after completing your undergraduate or graduate program. Even If you currently have no interest in public policy, you'll learn quite a lot about policy issues and become knowledgeable enough to go toe-to-toe with wonks from the Capitol.

    Cons

Work-life balance has worsened over the years and overtime is becoming the new norm. In addition, the office's restructuring has limited opportunities for audit staff to promote into senior positions.

    Advice to Management

Develop more realistic budgets and timelines, so that staff at all levels can find a balance between work and their personal lives. Over the past few years, more and more staff at all levels have left to find a balance that no longer exists in the office.

I worked at California State Auditor

    Pros

Stability, opportunity for annual raises (recently). Generally good coworkers and the opportunity to form good friendships throughout the course of an audit. Benefits are great (15 hours/month PTO), state pension, solid health, dental, etc. Depending on what audits you get assigned to there is potential for impactful, interesting work. Potential for travel (can be both good and bad).

    Cons

A lot of the cons have to do with the nature of auditing and personal preference. There is also a lot of potential for less than fascinating job assignments. Audits are typically handed down from the legislature, who doesn't always understand what auditing standards permit us to actually do. Since this is the case we sometimes get stuck having to carry out assignments that are a waste of money and resources, even if it's...

    Advice to Management

Trust your audit teams who are on the group or at least communicate your reasons for rejecting their proposals. Interaction between upper management and lower level staff was limited and seemed to lack authenticity. Demonstrate genuine interest in lower level staff and their growth and development

I have been working at California State Auditor full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Strives for life work balance. Competitive pay and benefits. Tries to minimize travel. Potential for leadership responsibility quickly if motivated and talented. Can give CPA qualifying experience

    Cons

As all professional service organizations, can have substantial overtime to meet deadlines. On some projects can have substantial travel. Like all auditing jobs, can be tedious at times.

I have been working at California State Auditor full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

-Good starting pay, depending on degree -Decent work hours flexibility -Great work/life balance; ample vacation time -A good balance between experienced and young auditors -The office is supportive of certifications (GFOA, CPA, CFE, CGFM, etc.) -Excellent benefits; depending on your plan, the office can cover all premiums (health, dental, vision) -Constant exposure to all levels of management -Multiple opportunities...

    Cons

-Potentially a high stress environment -Time budgets can be strict, requiring auditors to be as efficient as possible with what time they are given in completing certain audit objectives/tasks -Certain projects can be less than interesting -Auditees may be irritating; however, this is the job of any auditor.

    Advice to Management

-Focus less on time budgets. Issues in the audit arise and adjustments need to be made for a reasonable completion of audit objectives. -Allow for more social gatherings to decompress; the office sometimes is too high-strung

I have been working at California State Auditor full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Great work-life balance; you get Sooooo much vacation time and holidays. Great Benefits!! Healthcare is amazing.

    Cons

The work is incredibly boring and tedious. Not a lot of room for promotion or increase in pay. Only a few executive and supervisor positions. Executive Office doesn't really care about their employees. High-pressure and stress for work that doesn't make much of an impact.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees a little better. Make them feel like they can approach you, not like they are inferior. God forbid you throw a holiday party. It's hard enough to come to this place and handle the kinds of people and types of pressure that your employees face. Lighten things up a little bit. Increase the pay for supervisory positions. Make it desirable to advance.
