I worked at California Water Service full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are OK and pay is competitive

    Cons

IT Staff is overworked and often maligned by executive management. Long hours with little regard for personal life. IT Managers are encouraged to abuse staff.

    Advice to Management

Revamp your entire IT Management Team and put in solid professionals who are not abusive ego maniacs.

I worked at California Water Service full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, pension, and 401(k). If you are a management employee - company car, gas, and insurance. Pay is comparable to others in a similar industry.

    Cons

Very political environment, HR is transactional and not a seen as a key part of the organization, travel is expected for management employees with little notice, work-life balance leaves much to be desired, most employees have grown up at Cal Water, and nepotism is rampant.

    Advice to Management

Stop coddling your employees - teach them to think for themselves, allow HR to do its job, get the old guard out of the organization - they add no value. Marty Kropelnicki is an incredible leader who can transform that organization - let him!

"Temporary & Uncertain for Clerical Staff"

    Pros

There will always be the need for water. I went through an Agency as a Temp. If you perform satisfactorily you will be converted after 3 months to a temporary employee. The money is really good, the people are nice enough.

    Cons

Another temporary employee manipulated her way into the position and got it because she had seniority over me. She ended up leaving shortly thereafter because she didn't like it! There is a lot of training temps for the short term which seems counter-productive. They are labor union based so there is some hostility among employees. It is hard to move up. Employees are kind of cliquish. If you can get in permanent FT and stay there you are fortunate.

    Pros

People genuinely try to be nice; Strong work ethics; True can-do attitudes with heart-felt intentions to help members of the community.

    Cons

A lot of uncertainty on work processes; Discrepancies mentioned to management are turned around to make you look bad or ignorant, which makes it better to keep quiet. Supervisors have certain people they consider "favorites", so they often overlook the errors made by these individuals. This includes arriving to work and leaving from work, 10 - 15 minutes late or early, every day. One week I counted that my co-worker slighted the company a total of 30 minutes a day, and our supervisor stayed in their office and pretended not to notice.

    Advice to Management

Higher Management needs to have an "Open Door Policy" session, which will enable employees the ability to speak up on issues that are of concern to them, without fear of retribution.
