I worked at Calix for more than a year

    Pros

*Fun atmosphere *Very knowledgeable coworkers *Allowed to bring dogs to any company campus *Mostly self-directed work scheduling

    Cons

*Managers don't always communicate well. *Work can be monotonous *Will spend serious money on equipment that doesn't always have a use, but is hesitant to hire people full time and authorize travel expenses.

    Advice to Management

Try to be involved in assignments on a technical level from time to time. Don't hold a meeting and equate that to getting work done.

    "Best place to retire"

    No opinion of CEO

    I worked at Calix

    Pros

I'm speaking from the engineering perspective. This may or may not apply to other departments. If you want to retire, and don't want to learn anything new, this is the place. The challenges are not great, the work is very simple. Occasionally there is overtime work, but most of the time it's just 9 to 5.

    Cons

Lots of the engineers are very old-schooled, and there's no passion shown towards their work. They don't want to learn anything new, and very comfortable with what they have. Can you imagine, in these days of age, you guys use only C? Not only that, the team is currently too big, too much overhead.

    Advice to Management

The senior management doesn't seem to understand how to effectively develop a software. There are few books I recommend them to read: - Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams - The Mythical Man Month - The Pragmatic Programmer - Code Complete Carl maybe great on the sales side, but it's a big NO NO for engineering.
