I worked at Caltrans part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The supervisor is compassionate and knowledgeable. The emphasis is on team work. Communication is good (could be better) even though it is a small office. The employees know what is expected of them. It has a casual dress code.

    Cons

The company hires many intermittent employees, and that causes a lot of turnover. I was an intermittent employee.

I have been working at Caltrans for more than 8 years

    Pros

The only pros I can think of, is there are good benefits but is not worth the unsafe work environment.

    Cons

A lot of discrimination, sexual harassment, and severe retaliation for coming forward making Caltrans a very unsafe work environment.

I have been working at Caltrans full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Centralization (access to busses). Flexibility. Pays the mortgage.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for advancement. Work goes unrecognized. If you are not an engineer, you are usually out of the loop for work recognition. It doesn't matter how much time or effort you have put in. If you are not part of a circle or don't kiss enough bump, you will have a hard time. Too many politics.

I worked at Caltrans part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great management team. Great staff support. Provided excellent opportunities for upward mobility

    Cons

Too strict on time and tardiness. No leniency. Too much work load. Need more staff support that are not temp jobs

I have been working at Caltrans full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good Policies, such as EEO, Ethics, Violence Prevention, Harassment Prevention, Zero Tolerance of Discrimination and Violence, Upgrade Employee to Higher Position, etc.

    Cons

Nobody Enforce Policies, for examples: I was medically terminated without following any rules and regulations, after I got the job back the retaliation never stopped; I do not have job descriptions over ten years; I have only one IDP over ten years without following correct procedure; I did out of classification work over six years; I am the only one in my office with college degree, passed SSA exam., did higher level work, but I am the only one did not get upgrade; my email regarding discrimination to my supervisor was deleted after four month without reading it, and my supervisor said that he read it without opening my email; I have to follow what my supervisor said instead of what the law said; etc.

I have been working at Caltrans full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexibility of hours, vacation days, etc.

    Cons

Hard work pays off for some. However, some get nothing but more work. It's who you know not what you know.
