Fantastic employee support in training and mentoring. Recognizes work life balance and institutes policies to promote this behavior. Within department of Landscape Architecture, great sense of camaraderie. Pay is within parity of private and public agencies and represented by the engineering union.
Cons
Promotion is difficult as top spots are rarely vacated. Established engineers reluctant to implement new technologies. Doesn't recruit well despite some obvious benefits of working here.

Pros
Work and life balance is good. The pay is catching up in recent years. Have all the heath insurance. People are friendly.
Cons
It has been changed a lot for the last 20 years. There is more and more bureaucracy and politics around the work place. Work experience is very limited.

Self awareness can be lacking in my experience from higher up and co-workers

Great Organization
Aug 22, 2019 - Associate Governmental Program Analyst in Fresno, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Been here over a year. Came from private industry. Everyone is friendly and professional. Great training programs to focus on fostering good employees unlike the bottom line of private companies. Great management as well who do not micro manage my work. Great work/life balance and a genuine feeling of positive work for the public (even though the public may not see it that way). Many opportunities to be involved with projects and grow. I hear it's pretty normal to have employees who work for 20-30 years, which is a sign that the pay and organization is worth it. Lots of ways to motivate employees and build camaraderie.
Cons
Some co-workers are not as focused as others but as long as it is not creating a hostile work environment, I'm okay with it. Took a paycut working for the State and hope it be worth it in the end. My career track is not the highest paying unlike the engineers. Anyone who aspire to become a high-level manager level should have engineering experience (makes sense since this is a transportation agency).
